Example Data Table

Current Grade Goal Grade Final Weight Required Final Status
88% 90% 25% 96% Reachable
76% 80% 30% 89.33% Reachable
92% 85% 20% 57% Safe
70% 90% 20% 170% Very hard

Formula Used

The calculator uses weighted grade logic. Your current grade covers the course work already completed. The final exam weight covers the remaining part.

Required final score = (Desired grade - Current grade × (1 - Final weight) - Extra credit - Curve points) ÷ Final weight

Projected grade = Current grade × (1 - Final weight) + Final score × Final weight + Extra credit + Curve points

Use the final weight as a decimal during calculation. For example, 25% becomes 0.25.

How to Use This Calculator

Choose a calculation mode first. Use required score mode when you know your course goal. Use projected grade mode when you know your expected final score.

Enter your current grade, target grade, and final exam weight. Add extra credit or curve points when they apply. Press calculate. The result appears below the header and above the form.

Use CSV export for spreadsheet records. Use PDF export for simple sharing or printing.

Roger Hub Final Grade Planning Guide

A final grade calculator helps students make clear exam goals. Many students know their current grade, yet they do not know what final score they need. This tool turns that question into a simple weighted grade result.

Why Final Weight Matters

The final exam does not always count the same in every class. Some finals count 10 percent. Others count 40 percent or more. A heavier final can change your course grade quickly. A lighter final gives less room for change.

Required Score Mode

Use required score mode when you have a target grade. Enter your current grade, your desired grade, and the final exam weight. The calculator solves the final exam score needed to reach that target. It also tells you whether the score is realistic.

Projected Grade Mode

Use projected grade mode when you want to test possible results. Enter the score you expect on the final. The calculator estimates your final course grade. This helps compare safe, average, and strong exam outcomes.

Extra Credit and Curves

Some classes include bonus points or curves. These can improve the final course grade. Add them only when your teacher confirms them. Guessing too high can make your plan less useful.

Better Study Decisions

The result can guide study time. If your needed score is low, review key topics and protect your grade. If your needed score is high, focus on weak chapters first. Build a practice plan around the largest point areas.

Reading the Result

A needed score below 100 percent is usually possible. A score above 100 percent means the target may need extra credit or a different goal. A negative needed score means your current grade already covers the target.

Use Results Carefully

This calculator gives an estimate based on the values entered. Always check your syllabus. Confirm whether grades are rounded. Ask your instructor about category weights, dropped scores, and grading rules before making final decisions.

FAQs

What is a final grade calculator?

It estimates the final exam score needed for a target grade. It can also project your course grade from an expected final score.

What does current grade mean?

Current grade means your course average before the final exam. It should include all graded work already counted by your teacher.

What does final weight mean?

Final weight is the percentage of the course grade assigned to the final exam. Enter 25 for a final worth 25 percent.

Can the required score be above 100?

Yes. That means the target grade is not reachable through the final alone, unless extra credit, curves, or grading adjustments apply.

Why is my required score negative?

A negative score means your current grade is already strong enough for the selected target, based on the entered final weight.

Does this support extra credit?

Yes. Enter extra credit points in the extra credit field. Add only confirmed points for a more reliable estimate.

Can I export my result?

Yes. After calculation, use the CSV or PDF button. CSV works well for spreadsheets. PDF works well for records.

Is this result always exact?

It is exact for the values entered. Actual grades may differ because of rounding, category rules, dropped scores, or instructor policies.
