Zoysia Overseeding Calculator

Estimate seed needed, cost, and best timing for overseeding or establishing Zoysia. Includes area by sections or map pin‑drop, zone‑based timing, and success probability.

1) Lawn Area Measurement
Use the sections list for rectangles or the map below for irregular shapes. You can combine both if you like.

Rectangular Sections
# Length Width Units Area
Sections Total: 0 sq ft
Irregular Area (Map pin‑drop)
Draw a polygon around your lawn. Area: 0 sq ft

Blended Overseeding (optional)
3) Timing, Zone & Prep
Zoysia thrives in zones ~6–11.

Regional Timing Guidance

Recommendations vary by USDA zone and season. Use these as general guidelines and adjust for local weather.

  • Zone 6–7: late spring to early summer when soil temps consistently > 65–70°F.
  • Zone 8–9: late spring; avoid peak midsummer heat spells.
  • Zone 10–11: late spring or early summer; ensure consistent irrigation.
Tip: Adjust germination %, prep level, and loss factor to reflect your conditions.

How This Zoysia Overseeding Calculator Works

This tool transforms on-site measurements and horticultural assumptions into a practical overseeding plan for Zoysia lawns. Start by quantifying area. You can add multiple rectangular sections for simple spaces and trace polygons on the map for curved or irregular boundaries. The calculator converts every input to square feet, then combines section totals with optional map polygons to form one working area. Accurate area measurement drives everything that follows.

Next, choose your seeding purpose (overseeding thin turf versus new establishment) and a Zoysia cultivar, such as Zenith, Meyer, EMPIRE, El Toro, or Zeon. Each cultivar–purpose pair auto-populates a conservative seeding rate in pounds per 1,000 square feet. You may refine that rate to match label guidance. The core formula calculates base pounds as: rate × (total area ÷ 1,000).

Because labeled bags list a germination percentage, the calculator adjusts for Pure Live Seed by dividing base pounds by the germination fraction. For example, if germination is 85%, required seed increases by approximately 100⁄85. Preparation practices also matter. Selecting No prep, Light aeration, or Full dethatch applies modest multipliers to acknowledge improved seed-to-soil contact. Finally, you can include a safety margin (commonly 10–20%) to account for uneven spreading, bird loss, or wind.

Step Symbol Computation
Area A Sum of sections + polygons (sq ft)
Base seed B rate (lbs/1k) × (A ÷ 1,000)
Germination adjustment G B × (100 ÷ germ%)
Prep multiplier P 1.10 (no prep), 1.05 (light), 1.00 (full)
Loss factor L (1 + loss%)
Total seed T G × P × L (reported in lbs and kg)

If you enable blended overseeding, the calculator allocates total pounds between Zoysia and a companion cool-season grass (rye or fescue) using your chosen percentage split, then prices each portion separately. Enter a per-pound price for Zoysia and a companion price to estimate overall cost.

Timing influences outcomes. Pick a USDA zone or detect via ZIP to receive a dynamic message that aligns with soil-temperature windows typical of warm-season germination. The success gauge summarizes multiple factors—germination percentage, prep level, zone suitability, loss factor, and blending—into an intuitive Low/Medium/High probability estimate. Export your plan as CSV or PDF and share by email to streamline trips to the seed supplier.
