Example Data Table

These examples use the default editable assumptions shown in the calculator.

Scenario Capacity (kW) Load (%) Hours Units Fuel Use (L) CO₂e (kg)
Peak shaving day 500 75 6 1 607.50 1,662.84
Backup outage event 350 85 10 2 1,606.50 4,399.64

Emergency drill 1,000 50 3 1 405.00 1,108.61

Formula Used

Delivered Power (kW)
Delivered Power = Rated Capacity × Load Percentage
Electricity Output (kWh)
Electricity Output = Delivered Power × Runtime Hours × Generator Count
Fuel Use (L)
Fuel Use = Electricity Output × Fuel Rate
Thermal Input (MJ)
Thermal Input = Fuel Use × Diesel Lower Heating Value
Effective Electrical Efficiency (%)
Efficiency = (Electricity Output × 3.6 ÷ Thermal Input) × 100
Pollutant Mass
Pollutant = Fuel Use × Emission Factor
For CH₄ and N₂O entered in grams per litre, divide by 1000 to convert to kilograms.
CO₂e (kg)
CO₂e = CO₂ + (CH₄ × CH₄ GWP) + (N₂O × N₂O GWP)
Carbon Intensity
Carbon Intensity = CO₂e ÷ Electricity Output

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the rated generator capacity in kilowatts.
  2. Set the average operating load as a percentage.
  3. Add runtime hours and the number of generators.
  4. Review or replace default fuel and emission factors.
  5. Click Calculate Emissions to produce results.
  6. Check summary metrics, pollutant totals, and carbon intensity.
  7. Use the chart to compare load-related fuel and CO₂e changes.
  8. Download CSV or PDF outputs for reporting and review.

For best results, replace defaults with measured fuel use, approved inventory factors, or engine-specific test data.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this calculator estimate?

It estimates electricity output, fuel use, thermal input, efficiency, direct pollutants, and carbon dioxide equivalent emissions for diesel generator operations.

Are the default emission factors universal?

No. They are editable starting values. Use your site permits, fuel analysis, engine test reports, or local regulatory factors whenever available.

Can I model multiple generators together?

Yes. Enter the number of identical generators in service. The tool multiplies energy, fuel use, and emissions across the selected unit count.

Why is fuel rate entered as litres per kWh?

That input links fuel burn directly to delivered electricity. It is practical for planning because many operators track generator performance this way.

Why are CH4 and N2O included in CO2e?

Carbon dioxide is dominant, but methane and nitrous oxide have stronger warming effects per kilogram. Converting them with GWP values gives total climate impact.

Can this support ESG reporting?

Yes. It helps estimate operational emissions for internal reviews, site dashboards, investor questionnaires, and draft sustainability disclosures before formal assurance.

Should I use measured fuel or default fuel rate?

Measured fuel is better when available. If you know actual litres consumed, divide by produced kWh and use that specific fuel rate for stronger estimates.

How can I reduce generator emissions?

Lower runtime, improve load management, maintain engines well, use cleaner fuel, optimize sizing, and replace long operating hours with grid or renewable alternatives.
