Adjusted kWh = Delivered kWh × (1 + Loss % ÷ 100)

3. Split renewable and residual electricity
Renewable kWh = Adjusted kWh × Renewable share
Residual kWh = Adjusted kWh − Renewable kWh

4. Location-based emissions
Location emissions = Adjusted kWh × Location factor

5. Market-based blended factor
Blended factor = (Renewable share × Renewable factor) + (Residual share × Market factor)

6. Market-based emissions
Market emissions = Adjusted kWh × Blended factor

2. Why are there two emission methods?

Location-based emissions reflect average grid intensity. Market-based emissions reflect contractual electricity attributes, such as renewable certificates or supplier-specific factors. Many ESG frameworks ask organizations to disclose both views.

3. Should I include transmission and distribution losses?

Include losses when your methodology requires upstream electricity generation to satisfy delivered demand. Leave losses at zero when your boundary only covers metered electricity consumption.

4. What unit should I use for emission factors?

Use kilograms of CO2e per kilowatt-hour. The calculator converts MWh and GWh consumption into kWh automatically before calculating emissions.

5. What does renewable matched share mean?

It represents the portion of electricity backed by renewable supply claims, green tariffs, or certificates. That share uses the renewable factor in the market-based calculation.

6. Can I use this for monthly or annual reporting?

Yes. The calculator works for any reporting period as long as the electricity data and emission factors match the same boundary and timeframe.

7. Why can avoided emissions be negative?

Negative avoided emissions mean the market-based setup produces higher emissions than the location-based baseline. This can happen when market factors exceed the average grid factor.
