Formula Used

1) Sales tax amount
Sales Tax = Vehicle Price × (Sales Tax Rate ÷ 100)
2) Net purchase cost
Net Purchase Cost = Vehicle Price + Sales Tax + Dealer Fees − Trade-In Value − Rebates
3) Loan principal
Loan Principal = Net Purchase Cost − Down Payment
4) Monthly loan payment
Monthly Payment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)−n)
Where P is loan principal, r is monthly interest rate, and n is total months.
5) Annual fuel cost
Annual Fuel Cost = (Annual Miles ÷ Fuel Efficiency) × Fuel Price
6) Annual operating cost
Annual Operating Cost = Fuel + Insurance + Maintenance + Repairs + Registration + Parking/Tolls + Cleaning
7) Net total ownership cost
Net Total Ownership Cost = Down Payment + Loan Payments During Ownership + Operating Cost Over Ownership − Expected Resale Value + Remaining Loan Balance
8) Cost per mile
Cost Per Mile = Net Total Ownership Cost ÷ Total Miles Driven

FAQs

1. What costs are included here?

The calculator includes purchase price, taxes, dealer fees, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance, repairs, registration, parking, cleaning, and expected resale value.

2. Why does resale value matter?

Resale value lowers your effective ownership cost because money recovered at sale offsets part of the original purchase and financing burden.

3. Does this work for cash purchases?

Yes. Set the loan principal to zero by entering enough down payment. The calculator will still estimate operating costs, depreciation, and monthly ownership cost.

4. How is cost per mile calculated?

It divides total ownership cost by total miles driven during the selected ownership period, giving a normalized figure for comparison.

5. Can I compare two vehicles with it?

Yes. Run the calculator twice with different values and compare total ownership cost, average monthly cost, and cost per mile.

6. Is depreciation the same as resale loss?

In this tool, depreciation cost is the drop from net purchase cost to expected resale value. It is a practical ownership estimate.

7. Why is remaining loan balance included?

If you sell before the loan ends, any unpaid balance still affects what the sale actually returns to you.

8. Are the results exact?

No. They are planning estimates based on your inputs. Actual ownership costs can change with fuel prices, insurance, repairs, and resale conditions.
