This sample uses the default values shown in the form and demonstrates how financing, fuel, and resale interact.
1. Sales tax amount
Sales Tax = Purchase Price × (Sales Tax Rate ÷ 100)
2. Net vehicle cost before financing
Net Vehicle Cost = Purchase Price + Sales Tax + Upfront Fees − Incentives
3. Amount financed
Amount Financed = Net Vehicle Cost − Down Payment − Trade-In Value
4. Monthly loan payment
Monthly Payment = P × [r(1 + r)n] ÷ [(1 + r)n − 1]
P = financed amount, r = monthly interest rate, n = number of months.
5. Annual fuel cost
Annual Fuel Cost = (Annual Miles ÷ MPG) × Fuel Price
6. Annual recurring cost
Annual Recurring Cost = Fuel + Insurance + Maintenance + Registration + Other Costs + Battery Reserve
7. Equity at sale
Equity at Sale = Resale Value − Remaining Loan Balance
8. Total ownership cost
Total Cost = Down Payment + Trade-In + Loan Payments During Ownership + Total Recurring Cost − Equity at Sale
9. Cost per mile
Cost per Mile = Total Ownership Cost ÷ Total Miles Driven
It includes financing, sales tax, fees, fuel, insurance, maintenance, registration, other yearly costs, battery reserve, resale value, and cost per mile.
Yes. It works for mild hybrids, full hybrids, and plug-free hybrid models, as long as you enter realistic MPG, financing, and operating assumptions.
Resale value offsets part of your total ownership cost. A stronger resale estimate lowers the net cost of owning the vehicle over time.
It lets you budget a yearly amount for future battery-related work. This helps build a more conservative and realistic ownership estimate.
Yes. A trade-in reduces the amount financed, but it is still part of your ownership investment, so the calculator includes it in total cost.
It is only as accurate as your miles, MPG, and fuel price inputs. Try several fuel-price scenarios for better planning.
Yes. When APR is zero, the financed amount is divided evenly across the loan term without compounding interest.
Yes. Run the calculator twice using different assumptions, then compare yearly cost, total cost, equity at sale, and cost per mile.
