Boiler Insulation Removal Calculator

Turn measurements into a practical insulation removal estimate. Built for contractors managing tight outages daily. Export results, justify bids, and control site risks better.

Inputs

Total cladding/blanket area to be removed.
Used to estimate waste volume and weight.
Typical: mineral wool 120–220, calcium silicate 240–320.
Before difficulty multipliers are applied.
Used to convert worker-hours into job duration.
All-in rate: wages, burdens, and allowances.
Isolation, laydown prep, tool staging, and cleanup.
Affects effort due to access equipment.
Includes transport, tipping fees, and packaging.
Extra weight for debris, moisture, bags, and overlap.
As a percentage of labor cost.
Applied to direct costs.
Applied after overhead.
Impacts productivity due to reach and congestion.
Hard-set materials take longer to break out.
Wet or frozen insulation increases handling time.
Adds permitting, ventilation, and slower movement.
Higher containment increases labor and setup needs.
Use "Yes" if regulated procedures apply.
Higher PPE adds don/doff time and breaks.

Values are estimates for planning and bidding. Validate site constraints, permits, and disposal rules.

Formula Used

1 Volume = Area × Thickness

2 Base worker-hours = Area ÷ Productivity

3 Total multiplier = Access × Type × Condition × Height × Confined × Containment × Asbestos × PPE

4 Total worker-hours = (Base worker-hours × Total multiplier) + (Setup hours per worker × Crew size)

5 Job duration = Total worker-hours ÷ Crew size

6 Waste mass = Volume × Density × (1 + Waste factor)

7 Total cost = Direct cost + Overhead + Profit

Tip: For premium bids, replace multipliers with your historical production rates.

How to Use

  1. Measure total boiler insulation surface area to remove.
  2. Enter average thickness and a realistic material density.
  3. Set your baseline productivity per worker for simple conditions.
  4. Choose access, condition, containment, and PPE that match the site.
  5. Enter disposal rate, overhead, and profit for your estimate.
  6. Click Calculate to see duration, waste mass, and costs.
  7. Export CSV or PDF for bids, approvals, or daily planning.

Example Data Table

Scenario Area (m²) Thickness (mm) Crew Access Containment Worker-hours Waste (kg)
Standard outage 35 50 3 Standard Basic ~33 ~350
Congested platform 60 75 4 Restricted Negative pressure ~92 ~1,430
Hard-set removal 22 40 2 Scaffold-heavy Full enclosure ~78 ~250
Example values are illustrative. Your results depend on inputs and chosen options.
