About This Calculator

A hedge installation usually looks simple at first. Real planning is not simple. You need the run length, spacing rule, number of rows, site gaps, mulch depth, and a practical waste allowance. This calculator brings those choices together in one place.

It is useful for boundary planting, privacy screening, frontage upgrades, site edging, and small landscape construction work. You can test a dense hedge layout or a looser layout before you order materials. That helps reduce overbuying and last minute shortages.

The calculator estimates effective hedge length after deductions for openings. It then adds any end allowance, calculates plants per row, multiplies by row count, and applies waste. It also estimates bed coverage, mulch volume, compost demand, plant cost, and labor cost.

This makes it easier to compare two different installation approaches. For example, you can test wider spacing with fewer plants, or tighter spacing with faster visual coverage. You can also compare one row against a double row for screening strength and material use.

The result section appears above the form after submission. That placement makes review easier, especially when you want to adjust only one or two inputs and recalculate again.

Formula Used

Effective Hedge Length = (Total Hedge Length − Openings Or Gaps) + (2 × End Allowance)

Plants Per Row = ceil(Effective Hedge Length ÷ Plant Spacing) + 1

Base Plants = Plants Per Row × Planting Rows

Total Plants With Waste = ceil(Base Plants × (1 + Waste Percentage ÷ 100))

Coverage Area = Effective Hedge Length × Bed Width

Mulch Volume = Coverage Area × Mulch Depth

Total Compost = Total Plants With Waste × Compost Per Plant

Estimated Total = Plant Cost Total + Labor Cost Total

How To Use This Calculator

  1. Choose metric or imperial units.
  2. Enter the total hedge run.
  3. Subtract gates, utility breaks, or other openings in the gaps field.
  4. Enter plant spacing based on the selected species and finish style.
  5. Select how many rows you want to plant.
  6. Enter bed width and mulch depth for coverage estimates.
  7. Add compost per plant, unit plant cost, labor cost, waste percentage, and any end allowance.
  8. Press the calculate button and review the result section above the form.
  9. Use the CSV or PDF buttons to export the result summary.

Example Data Table

Entrance Border B 14 m 0.4 m 2 8 82
Boundary Hedge C 32 m 0.6 m 1 10 61
Double Row Screen D 18 m 0.45 m 2 7 90

FAQs

1. What spacing should I use for hedge plants?

Use the mature spread and screening goal. Formal hedges usually need tighter spacing. Informal hedges often use wider spacing. Test a few values here before placing the order.

2. Why does the calculator add one extra plant per row?

Linear planting usually starts with a plant near one end and ends with another near the far end. Adding one helps represent both ends of the run.

3. Should I include gaps for gates and driveways?

Yes. Enter all non planted sections in the gaps field. This keeps the effective hedge length realistic and prevents buying too many plants.

4. What does waste percentage cover?

Waste can cover replacement stock, damaged plants, measurement tolerance, and small layout changes on site. Many projects include a modest allowance for safety.

5. Can I use this for double row screening?

Yes. Increase the rows value to two or more. The calculator will multiply the row count and adjust total plant demand automatically.

6. Why is mulch volume useful in hedge planning?

Mulch volume helps with ordering bulk material, delivery planning, and installation sequencing. It also gives a better total project view than plant count alone.

7. Does this calculator include species specific growth rules?

No. It uses your spacing input. Always confirm final spacing with nursery guidance, project specifications, and the expected mature width of the selected plant.

8. Can I export the result for clients or site files?

Yes. After calculation, use the CSV or PDF buttons. They export the result summary so you can share estimates or keep a quick project record.
