Formula Used
This calculator models received optical power as transmit power minus total planned link loss.
Total Planned Loss = Fiber Loss + Splitter Loss + Connector Loss + Splice Loss + Panel Loss + Filter Loss + Bend Allowance + Extra Loss + Design Margin + Aging Margin
Fiber Loss = Length (km) × Attenuation (dB/km)
Received Power = Tx Power (dBm) − Total Planned Loss (dB)
Margin = Received Power − Receiver Sensitivity
The class preset check compares ODN loss (excluding design and aging margins) against the chosen ODN class budget.
How to Use This Calculator
- Pick an ODN class preset to sanity-check the passive loss target.
- Choose single-stage or two-stage splitting, then select ratios.
- Enter route length and attenuation values for both directions.
- Add counts for connectors, splices, and patch panels.
- Include filter, bend, and extra component allowances if present.
- Set engineering margins to match your design standard.
- Enter optics values from your transceiver datasheets.
- Click Calculate Budget to view pass/fail and margins.
- Use Download CSV/PDF to archive calculations.
Example Data Table
These examples reuse the default optics and loss assumptions, changing only split ratio, distance, and class.
| Scenario | Length (km) | Split | Class | Total Loss Down (dB) | Total Loss Up (dB) | Margin Down (dB) | Margin Up (dB) | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Urban 1:32 | 10.0 | 1:32 | N2 | 28.60 | 29.60 | 3.40 | 0.40 | PASS |
| Suburban 1:64 | 15.0 | 1:64 | N2 | 33.35 | 34.85 | -1.35 | -4.85 | CHECK |
| Rural 1:128 | 20.0 | 1:128 | E2 | 38.10 | 40.10 | -6.10 | -10.10 | CHECK |
Tip: for accurate planning, replace defaults with measured insertion losses and vendor optics specs.
