Formula Used

Base grade points come from the selected letter or percent grade.

Weighted course points = Base grade points + Course level boost.

Weighted quality points = Weighted course points × Course credits.

Weighted GPA = Total weighted quality points ÷ Total included credits.

Cumulative GPA = Previous weighted points plus current weighted points, divided by combined credits.

When the cap option is enabled, each course is limited to 4.5 points.

Understanding Weighted GPA on a 4.5 Scale

What the calculator measures

A weighted GPA gives extra value to harder courses. It rewards academic rigor. A regular A usually equals 4.0 points. An advanced course may add a boost. On this page, the highest course value can be capped at 4.5 points. That makes the result easier to compare with schools using this scale.

Why credits matter

Credits control how much each class affects the final GPA. A one credit class counts more than a half credit class. The calculator multiplies each weighted grade by its credits. Then it divides the total quality points by total credits. This method gives a fair average across mixed course loads.

Letter and percent entries

You can enter grades as letters or percentages. A percentage is converted into a letter range first. Then the matching base points are used. This helps when report cards show numbers, while transcripts use letters. Always check your school handbook if it has a special grade chart.

Course level boosts

Regular classes receive no extra boost. Honors courses can receive a smaller boost. AP, IB, and college courses often receive a larger boost. The custom option supports schools with unique rules. The cap option prevents any course from going above 4.5 points.

Planning better outcomes

This calculator is useful before registration and after grades arrive. You can test different courses. You can compare honors and regular paths. You can also estimate how one stronger grade may raise your average. The CSV file helps spreadsheet review. The PDF file is useful for advising notes.

Important note

Schools do not all use the same weighted system. Some use 5.0 scales. Some limit only AP courses. Some round final numbers differently. Treat this result as an estimate unless it matches your official grading policy.
