Formula Used

  1. Current Monthly Cost = Housing + Groceries + Utilities + Transport + Healthcare + Insurance + Debt + Miscellaneous.
  2. Target Base Monthly Cost = Sum of all target city monthly categories.
  3. Adjustment Factor = Lifestyle Multiplier × (1 + Inflation Buffer ÷ 100).
  4. Adjusted Target Monthly Cost = Target Base Monthly Cost × Adjustment Factor.
  5. Equivalent Net Salary = Adjusted Target Monthly Cost + Current Monthly Balance, using positive current balance as the savings amount to preserve.
  6. Required Net Salary for Goal = Adjusted Target Monthly Cost ÷ (1 − Savings Goal Rate).
  7. Required Gross Salary = Required Net Salary ÷ (1 − Target Tax Rate).
  8. Cost of Living Index = (Adjusted Target Monthly Cost ÷ Current Monthly Cost) × 100.
  9. Target Monthly Balance at Offer = Offered Target Net Salary − Adjusted Target Monthly Cost.
  10. Relocation Payback Months = Relocation Cost ÷ Monthly Improvement versus Current, when the improvement is positive.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the cost of living index mean?

It compares adjusted target monthly costs with your current monthly costs. A value above 100 means the target city is more expensive. A value below 100 means it is cheaper.

2) Why use an inflation buffer?

It adds a safety margin to target expenses. This helps when prices rise, estimates are incomplete, or relocation timing introduces extra cost uncertainty.

3) What is the lifestyle multiplier for?

It adjusts target city costs upward or downward based on your preferred standard of living. Use values above 1.00 for a costlier lifestyle and below 1.00 for a leaner one.

4) Should I enter net salary or gross salary?

Enter monthly net salary for both current and target offer fields. The calculator estimates gross salary separately using the tax rates you provide.

5) Why compare monthly balance instead of salary alone?

A bigger paycheck can still leave less money after housing, transport, and other costs. Monthly balance shows the real financial outcome of the move.

6) What does the negotiation ask value show?

It starts with the gross salary needed to reach your savings target, then adds your negotiation buffer. It helps you frame a practical salary request.

7) Can I use this for family relocation planning?

Yes. Set the household size and enter family-level monthly expenses. You can also increase the lifestyle multiplier or inflation buffer to reflect added uncertainty.

8) Is this a replacement for a detailed relocation budget?

No. It is a strong screening tool for career planning and salary comparison. For final decisions, add visas, deposits, school fees, and one-time settlement costs.
