Formula Used

Quality Points per Course = Credits × Grade Points

Semester GPA = Total Planned Quality Points ÷ Total Planned Credits

Current Quality Points = Current GPA × Current Earned Credits

Projected Cumulative GPA = (Current Quality Points + Planned Quality Points) ÷ (Current Earned Credits + Planned Credits)

Required Future GPA = ((Target GPA × Total Future Credits) − Current Projected Quality Points) ÷ Additional Future Credits

How to Use This Calculator

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What makes a GPA credit weighted?

Each class affects GPA according to its credit value. A four-credit course changes the average more than a one-credit course. This calculator multiplies credits by grade points before averaging.

2. Can I use this for cumulative GPA planning?

Yes. Enter your current GPA and current earned credits first. Then add your planned courses. The projected cumulative GPA combines both records into one forecast.

3. Does this work with expected grades?

Yes. This planner is useful before final grades arrive. You can test several grade scenarios and compare how each one changes semester and cumulative GPA outcomes.

4. Why do quality points matter?

Quality points show the weighted value of each course. They make it easier to see which subjects most strongly affect your final GPA, especially when credit loads differ.

5. What if my school uses a different grading scale?

You can edit the grade options in the code if needed. Many schools use slight variations, such as 3.67 or 3.33 scales. Update the grade list to match your policy.

6. Can this help with scholarship planning?

Yes. If you need a minimum GPA for scholarships, internships, or graduation honors, enter that target and compare whether your current course plan can reach it.

7. What does required future average mean?

It estimates the GPA you must average across later credits after this term. This helps you judge whether your longer-term target is realistic or needs adjustment.

8. Should I rely only on this planner?

No. Use it as a decision tool, then confirm details with your official academic policy, adviser, and transcript rules. Some programs handle repeats and pass grades differently.
