Formula used

Market Share (%)

Market Share = (Company Value ÷ Total Market Value) × 100

Absolute Share Change (percentage points)

Absolute Change = Current Share − Previous Share

Relative Share Change (%)

Relative Share Change = ((Current Share − Previous Share) ÷ Previous Share) × 100

Growth and outperformance

Company Growth = ((Current Company Value − Previous Company Value) ÷ Previous Company Value) × 100. Market Growth uses the same structure. Outperformance Gap = Company Growth − Market Growth.

Share of market growth (%)

Share of Market Growth = ((Current Company Value − Previous Company Value) ÷ (Current Market Value − Previous Market Value)) × 100

Frequently asked questions

1. What does market share change measure?

It measures how your portion of total market activity changed between two periods. The calculator shows both percentage-point movement and relative share growth for clearer interpretation.

2. Can I use units instead of revenue?

Yes. You can use units sold, subscriptions, active users, volume, or revenue. Keep the same basis across both periods so the share comparison stays valid.

3. Why are percentage points and percent change different?

Percentage points show the direct share difference, such as 12% to 15% equaling +3 points. Percent change shows proportional movement relative to the original share.

4. What does outperformance gap mean?

It compares your company growth rate with the overall market growth rate. A positive value means the company expanded faster than the market and likely strengthened its position.

5. When should I use the neutral band?

Use it when tiny movements should count as noise rather than meaningful change. This is helpful with rounded datasets, seasonal variation, or minor reporting differences.

6. What is share of market growth?

It estimates how much of the total market increase was captured by your company. Higher values suggest the brand won a strong portion of new demand.

7. Can this calculator support forecasting?

Yes. Add forecast company and total market values to estimate a future market share and compare that projected share against the current period.

8. What input mistake causes invalid results most often?

The most common issue is mixing units, such as comparing company revenue with market units. Another is entering a company value larger than total market value.
