Example Data Table

Assessment Earned Max Percent Weight Weighted Contribution
Homework 1 17 20 85.00% 10% 8.50
Project 88 100 88.00% 20% 17.60
Midterm 73 100 73.00% 25% 18.25
Homework 2 46 50 92.00% 10% 9.20
Total completed 65% 53.55

If the target is 80%, the remaining 35% of the course needs an average of 75.57% to reach that target.

Formula Used

Assessment percentage = (Earned score ÷ Max score) × 100

Weighted contribution = Assessment percentage × Assessment weight ÷ 100

Completed weighted contribution = Sum of all weighted contributions

Current standing on completed work = Completed weighted contribution ÷ Completed weight × 100

Required average on remaining work = (Effective target − Extra credit − Completed weighted contribution) ÷ Remaining weight × 100

Required final exam score = (Effective target − Extra credit − Completed weighted contribution − Expected non-final contribution) ÷ Final exam weight × 100

Effective target equals your chosen target plus any safety buffer, capped at 100%.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your target grade and optional safety buffer.
  2. Add any extra credit points that will count toward the course.
  3. Fill in completed assessments with earned marks, maximum marks, and course weights.
  4. Enter the remaining final exam weight, if your course still has one.
  5. Set expected averages for future non-final work and the final exam.
  6. Press the calculate button to see your result summary above the form.
  7. Use the CSV or PDF buttons to save the result for later review.

FAQs

1. What does the calculator actually solve?

It finds your current weighted standing, the average needed on remaining work, and the final exam score required under your expected future performance scenario.

2. Can I use points instead of percentages?

Yes. Enter earned and maximum points for each completed assessment. The calculator converts each item into a percentage before applying its course weight.

3. Why do weights matter so much?

A high score in a low-weight task may move your course grade very little, while a moderate score in a heavily weighted exam can change it sharply.

4. What if my required average is above 100%?

That means your target is mathematically beyond the standard grading scale unless extra credit, reweighting, or assessment changes exist in your course policy.

5. What does the safety buffer do?

It raises your planning target above the minimum grade you want. Students often use a small buffer to protect against weaker-than-expected future scores.

6. Should final exam weight equal the whole remaining weight?

Only if the final exam is the only unfinished graded item. Otherwise, keep part of the remaining weight for coursework, labs, projects, or participation.

7. Does this replace my teacher's grading policy?

No. It is a planning tool. Always follow your official syllabus, rubric, rounding rules, and institutional policies when interpreting the result.

8. When should I export the results?

Export after testing different scenarios. Saved CSV and PDF files make it easier to compare study plans, revision targets, and performance assumptions.
