| Course | Credits | Grade | Level | Bonus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Algebra II | 4 | A | Honors | 0.5 |
| Biology | 3 | B+ | Regular | 0.0 |
| World History | 3 | A- | AP/IB | 1.0 |
| Art | 2 | B | Regular | 0.0 |
A weighted GPA combines achievement with course difficulty so transcripts reflect rigor. Many schools add 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP or IB, producing values above the traditional 4.0 scale. The metric is useful for internal comparisons, but colleges may recalculate using their own rules, so keep both weighted and unweighted figures available. Use it to set goals and communicate progress clearly.
The calculator converts each letter grade to base points, then multiplies by course credits to produce quality points. Credits matter: an A in a 4 credit class contributes more than an A in a 2 credit elective. Only included rows count, allowing you to omit non GPA courses. Weighted GPA equals total weighted quality points divided by total included credits for a consistent average.
Bonus policies vary, so the tool supports presets and a custom bonus per course. Weighted points equal base points plus bonus, then an optional cap limits the maximum per course. Some districts cap at 4.0, while others allow 5.0. With an A minus at 3.7 and a 1.0 bonus, the uncapped weighted points are 4.7; a 4.0 cap would reduce that to 4.0 before multiplying by credits.
Because the model is additive, you can test “what if” outcomes quickly. Suppose you have 12 credits at a 3.20 unweighted GPA, which implies 38.40 unweighted quality points. Adding a 3 credit Honors B plus course (3.3 base, 0.5 bonus) adds 9.90 unweighted and 11.40 weighted quality points. If your prior weighted quality points were 41.00, the updated weighted GPA becomes (41.00 + 11.40) ÷ 15 = 3.493, showing how one term shifts the average.
Accurate inputs improve decisions. Match your school’s scale, enter correct credits, and exclude pass fail courses when they do not affect GPA. Use the detailed table to confirm base points, bonuses, and per course quality points before exporting. CSV supports auditing and counseling notes, while PDF is a clean attachment for applications, advising meetings, and scholarship checklists. Keep a copy each term to track progress over time.
No. Weighted GPA highlights rigor, while unweighted shows raw grade performance. Many schools and scholarships review both, and some colleges recalculate GPAs using their own unweighted rules.
Select Custom for the course level and enter your school’s bonus value. You can mix presets and custom bonuses across courses to match local policy.
A cap limits the maximum weighted points per course before multiplying by credits. It reduces the boost from advanced classes when grades are already high.
If those courses do not affect GPA at your school, uncheck Include for that row. The calculator will exclude its credits and points from totals.
If the grade is not recognized on the selected scale, the row is skipped. Choose the correct scale or enter a valid letter grade format.
It is a helpful summary, not an official transcript. Use it for planning and advising, then submit your school’s transcript for formal verification.
