Formula used

This calculator builds a unitless Environmental Impact Factor (EIF) by normalizing each impact category against a baseline and combining them with weights.

Normalized_i = (Raw_i × Scale) / Baseline_i
Weighted_i = Normalized_i × Weight_i
EIF = max(0, Σ Weighted_i − Credits)

If log-scaled is selected, Normalized_i becomes ln(1 + Normalized_i) to reduce the effect of extreme outliers.

FAQs

1) What does the EIF score represent?
It is a unitless index built from normalized impacts and weights. Lower is better. It helps compare alternatives consistently within the same baseline and scope.
2) Can I use my own baselines and units?
Yes. Keep units consistent between raw values and baselines in each category. The calculator only uses ratios, so consistent pairing is the key requirement.
3) Why do weights matter so much?
Weights represent priority. Increasing a weight raises that category’s influence on EIF. Auto-normalize keeps the total active weight at one for easier comparison.
4) When should I choose log-scaled mode?
Use it when one category is extremely large and hides others. Log scaling softens outliers so you can still see contributions from smaller categories.
5) How do credits affect the result?
Credits subtract from the total EIF score. They are unitless adjustments for recycling, reuse, or verified offsets. Keep them conservative and well-documented.
6) Is this a full life-cycle assessment?
No. It is a structured screening tool for quick engineering comparisons. For compliance or public reporting, use an LCA method and verified datasets.
7) What’s a good way to set baselines?
Start with your current design, an industry reference, or an internal target. Update baselines when scope changes, so comparisons stay meaningful over time.
