Advanced Quilt Calculator

Design quilts with confidence using a powerful calculator that estimates blocks sashing borders backing batting binding and yardage. Enter finished size block dimensions and options for seam allowance fabric width and extra margin then see charts downloads and step by step guidance for accurate cutting and planning. Supports inches or centimeters and wastage percentages.

Input

All inputs below use selected units.
Typical quilting cotton ~40–42″ usable.
Quarter-inch is common.
2.5″ typical for double-fold binding.
Extra beyond quilt top for quilting.
Tip: Finished size includes borders. Blocks are assumed rectangular; sashing uniform; borders same width on all sides.

Formulas Used

  • Blocks across = ceil((W − 2B + S) ÷ (BW + S)) where W is finished width, B border width, S sashing width, BW block width.
  • Blocks down = ceil((H − 2B + S) ÷ (BH + S)) analogously.
  • Internal width = (cols × BW) + ((cols − 1) × S). Internal height analogously.
  • Sashing area = horizontal strips: (rows − 1) × S × internal width + vertical strips: (cols − 1) × S × internal height.
  • Sashing yardage (yards) ≈ (sashing area ÷ (S + 2 × seam)) ÷ 36.
  • Border area = W × H − (W − 2B) × (H − 2B). Yardage (yards) ≈ (border area ÷ (B + 2 × seam)) ÷ 36.
  • Binding yardage (yards) ≈ ceil((Perimeter + 10) ÷ WOF) × (binding strip width ÷ 36), where Perimeter = 2 × (W + H).
  • Backing panels = ceil((W + 2M) ÷ WOF). Backing yardage (yards) = panels × (H + 2M) ÷ 36. M is extra margin each side.
  • Batting cut size = (W + 2M) × (H + 2M).
  • Waste: Add wastage percent after totals are computed.

These are planning approximations for strip‑cut sashing and borders. Complex piecing, diagonals, bias binding, fussy cuts, or quilting patterns may require more fabric.

How to Use

  1. Select your unit system and confirm usable fabric width from selvage to selvage.
  2. Enter the finished dimensions. If you plan borders, include them in the finished size.
  3. Enter finished block size and sashing width. Set zero to omit sashing or borders.
  4. Set seam allowance, binding strip width, and extra margin for backing and batting.
  5. Click Calculate to see yardage for sashing, borders, binding, and backing with total including wastage.
  6. Export your results as CSV or PDF and use the chart to visualize where fabric is needed.

FAQs

1) What fabric width should I use?
Quilting cotton often has about 40–42 inches of usable width after removing selvages. Adjust the WOF field if your fabric differs.
2) Does this include fabric for the blocks themselves?
No. The calculator estimates sashing, borders, binding, and backing. Piecework requirements for blocks depend on your pattern.
3) Can I use centimeters?
Yes. Choose centimeters in the Units menu. All calculations convert internally and outputs display in yards and meters.
4) How much extra should I add for quilting?
Many quilters add 3–4 inches beyond the top on each side for backing and batting. Use the extra margin field to adjust.
5) Does the binding calculation assume bias or straight grain?
It assumes straight‑grain binding cut width. Bias binding or special joins may require extra length.
6) Are borders treated as mitered?
Yardage is area based and works for mitered or butted corners; add a little extra if you plan wide mitered corners.

Notes

  • All yardage rounded up to two decimals.
  • Totals include wastage after adding components.
  • For backing with directional prints, add extra for matching.
