Formula used

Risk index
Risk Index = AgeFactor × ExperienceFactor × MileageFactor × ClaimsFactor × ViolationsFactor × VehicleTypeFactor × AreaFactor.
The index scales premiums upward for higher exposure and downward for lower exposure.
Estimated premium
Estimated Monthly = BasePremium × Risk Index × CoverageFactor × DeductibleFactor × LiabilityFactor × VehicleValueFactor + MissingAddOnCosts.
Missing add-ons add a flat monthly surcharge when not included.
Fit score (0–100)
Fit Score = Budget(40) + Coverage Match(25) + Deductible Match(15) + Add-on Match(20).
Budget uses an exponential decay: closer to your target earns more points.
Adjust weights and factors to reflect underwriting goals or regional pricing patterns.

What the risk index captures

The risk index multiplies seven drivers: age, experience, mileage, claims, violations, vehicle type, and area risk. A value near 1.00 represents average exposure, while 1.25 indicates roughly 25% higher pricing pressure. In this calculator, drivers under 25 add a 1.25 factor, two claims can raise the index to 1.25, and “High” area risk adds 1.15.

Coverage and deductible trade-offs

Premiums are then scaled by coverage goal, deductible preference, liability limit, and vehicle value. Selecting “Maximum” coverage applies 1.12, while “Minimum” uses 0.95. A $500 deductible uses 1.12 versus 0.90 at $1,500. Liability moves from 0.92 at $50,000 to 1.16 at $500,000, reflecting higher protection.

Budget fit and ranking weights

Policies are ranked with a 0–100 fit score: Budget 40 points, Coverage Match 25, Deductible Match 15, and Add-on Match 20. The budget component uses exponential decay, so being 10% away from your budget scores far better than being 60% away. This is why a slightly higher premium can still rank well if coverage and add-ons align.

How sample policies are compared

The dataset includes six sample policies with base monthly premiums from $18 to $52, deductibles from $500 to $1,500, and liability limits from $50,000 to $500,000. Included add-ons vary by tier, such as rental reimbursement, glass coverage, accident forgiveness, and new car replacement. If you select an add-on that is not included, its flat monthly surcharge is added.

Using exports to test scenarios

Use the CSV or PDF exports to store multiple runs, for example changing mileage from 8,000 to 22,000, or switching from Sedan (1.00) to Sports (1.25). Saving scenarios helps you spot which choices move the premium most, and which policy remains the best match across inputs.

On the chart, bars show estimated monthly premium for the top five options, while the line shows fit score. If the premium bars cluster tightly but scores differ, adjust deductible or liability to improve alignment. Aim for a score above 75 when choices are close.

FAQs

Is this a real quote from an insurer?

No. It is a planning estimate using sample policy data and rating factors. Use it to compare scenarios and prepare questions, then request official quotes from licensed insurers or agents.

How does my monthly budget affect ranking?

Budget influences up to 40 points of the fit score. Options closer to your target earn more points, even if they are slightly higher, because the scoring reduces points quickly as the gap grows.

Why can a higher deductible lower my estimate?

A higher deductible means you pay more out of pocket if a claim happens, so monthly pricing pressure drops. The calculator applies 0.90 at $1,500 versus 1.12 at $500 to reflect that trade-off.

What happens when I select add-ons?

Selected add-ons raise the match score when a policy already includes them. If a policy does not include an add-on, the tool adds its flat monthly surcharge, such as $3 for rental reimbursement.

Can I edit the sample policy list?

Yes. The example table is defined in the file as a dataset. You can adjust base premiums, deductibles, liability limits, and included add-ons to match your market, then the ranking, chart, and exports update automatically.

How should I interpret the risk index number?

Around 1.00 is average for the chosen factors. Values below 1.00 suggest lower exposure, while 1.25 or higher indicates higher exposure. It combines age, experience, mileage, history, vehicle type, and area risk.
