Formula Used
Requested Plate Load = Target Total Weight − Bar Weight − Collar Weight
Requested Side Load = Requested Plate Load ÷ 2
Achieved Total = Bar Weight + Collar Weight + 2 × Σ(Plate Size × Pairs)
Difference = Achieved Total − Target Total Weight
Plate Pair Limit = floor(Available Plates ÷ 2)

1. What does this calculator actually solve?
It finds a balanced barbell setup using your chosen bar, collars, target total, and available plates. It also shows whether the result is exact, lower, higher, or simply the nearest reachable load.
2. Are plate counts entered as single plates or pairs?
Enter the total number of physical plates you own or can access. The calculator automatically converts those counts into usable left and right pairs.
3. Why can an exact target be unavailable?
An exact target may fail when your smallest increment is too large, your inventory is limited, or the requested load cannot be split evenly across both sides.
4. Should collar weight be entered per collar or total?
Enter the combined weight of both collars together. That makes the achieved total accurate without needing extra manual adjustments.
5. What is the difference between nearest, lower, and higher modes?
Nearest finds the closest reachable total. Lower gives the heaviest reachable load that does not exceed your target. Higher gives the lightest reachable load that meets or exceeds it.
6. Can I use this for warmups and percentage-based training?
Yes. Enter each planned total load one by one. It works well for warmup ladders, top sets, backoff work, and progressive overload planning.
7. Does the graph show total bar weight?
The graph focuses on plate distribution by size. It visualizes how many pairs are used and how much combined load each plate size contributes.
