Compost Mix Calculator

Build rich compost by tuning carbon and nitrogen. Choose materials, units, and moisture targets easily. See a clear recipe and adjust with confidence today.

Calculator inputs

The amount you want after curing and settling.
All volumes follow this unit unless changed.
Typical ranges: 20–50% depending on materials.
Most home piles do well near 30:1.
Common goal: 50–60% during active composting.
Estimate buckets of each material in your chosen unit.

High-carbon, dry, and bulky items.
Nitrogen-rich, wet, and fast to break down.
Editable material properties
Defaults are estimates; change them if you know yours.
Example: dry leaves ~60:1.
Lower moisture helps keep the pile airy.
Heavier materials have higher density.
Example: food scraps ~15:1.
Very wet greens can cause odors without enough browns.
Use your own measured scoop weight if possible.

Optional stabilizers or inoculants; keep small.
Set to 0 to disable add-ons.
May differ from your main unit if needed.

Typical: 2–8% of the initial pile volume.
Use finished compost or garden soil.

Example data table

A sample mix for quick reference (values are approximate).
Finished volume Shrink Target C:N Brown Green Estimated achieved C:N
120 L 30% 30:1 Dry leaves Food scraps ~29–33:1
4 cu ft 25% 28:1 Straw Grass clippings ~26–30:1
200 L 40% 35:1 Wood chips Aged manure ~33–38:1

Formula used

This tool treats each material as a wet mixture with three key properties: bulk density (kg/L), moisture fraction, and a C:N ratio.

This is an approximation. Shredding, airflow, and turning have major effects beyond C:N math.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the finished compost volume you want for your beds or pots.
  2. Pick a shrink allowance to estimate the starting pile size.
  3. Choose a brown and a green material, then adjust their properties if needed.
  4. Optionally add a small add-on (biochar, soil, or finished compost).
  5. Click Calculate mix to see recommended volumes and moisture advice.
  6. Layer and mix materials, then verify moisture by hand and adjust.
If the pile smells sour, add browns and turn. If it stays cold and dry, add greens and moisture.
