Example data table
| Plants | Habit | Trellis | Avg Temp (°C) | Recommended Volume | Typical Round Size |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bush | Yes | 24 | ≈ 16.0 L (4.2 gal) | ≈ 12–14 in dia, 12 in deep |
| 2 | Vining | Yes | 30 | ≈ 44.1 L (11.7 gal) | ≈ 18–20 in dia, 14 in deep |
| 2 | Vining | No | 34 | ≈ 72.5 L (19.2 gal) | ≈ 22–24 in dia, 16 in deep |
Examples are illustrative. Adjust for your variety and watering routine.
Formula used
This calculator estimates container volume from plant demand and climate buffering.
- Base liters per plant: bush = 15 L; vining + trellis = 20 L; vining without trellis = 30 L.
- Vine factor: compact = 0.90, standard = 1.00, long = 1.20.
- Temperature factor: 27–31.9°C = 1.05, ≥32°C = 1.15, otherwise 1.00.
- Per-plant volume: PerPlantL = BaseL × VineFactor × TempFactor.
- Total volume: TotalL = PerPlantL × Plants × 1.05 (buffer for settling and aeration).
- Round pot sizing: L = (π × (D/2)² × Depth) / 1000, with D and Depth in cm.
- Drainage holes: minimum holes = max(4, ceil(TotalL / 5)).
How to use this calculator
- Select a mode: recommend a pot or check an existing container.
- Choose growth habit and whether you will use a trellis.
- Set vine length class and your typical daytime temperature.
- Pick container shape and enter the required dimensions.
- Press Calculate to see results above this form.
- Use the download buttons to export CSV or PDF.
Tip: If you water less often, choose a larger container.
