1) Do I always need a drainage layer in containers?

Not always. Many mixes drain well without it, but a layer can help when outlets are limited, rainfall is heavy, or you want extra protection against blocked holes.

2) Should I use fabric between soil and drainage media?

A separator fabric reduces soil fines migrating downward and clogging voids. It is most useful with fine potting mixes, high watering frequency, or long‑term planters that are rarely repotted.

3) Can a drainage layer make waterlogging worse?
