Calculator

Total seeds planted in the test/tray.
Count emerged seedlings by your cutoff day.
If empty, observed rate is used.
Comma-separated counts per day to compute MGT and index.

Example data table

CropSeeds sownSeeds germinatedExpected rateTarget plantsDaily countsNotes

These values are illustrative. Your conditions will change results.

Formula used

  • Germination rate (%) = (Seeds germinated ÷ Seeds sown) × 100
  • Failure rate (%) = 100 − Germination rate
  • Seeds needed = ceil(Target plants ÷ Planning rate)
  • Planning rate = Expected rate (if provided) or observed rate
  • 95% interval uses the Wilson method for binomial data
  • MGT = Σ(t × nt) ÷ Σ(nt)
  • Germination index = Σ(nt ÷ t)
Here, t is the day number and nt is germinated seeds on day t.

How to use this calculator

  1. Count how many seeds you sowed in the tray.
  2. On your cutoff day, count emerged seedlings.
  3. Enter the two numbers and press Calculate.
  4. Add expected rate to plan future sowings.
  5. Enter target plants to estimate seeds needed.
  6. Optionally add daily counts for speed metrics.
  7. Download CSV or PDF to store the record.
Tip: Use the same observation window for fair comparisons.
