Use this to space herb pots, trays, and small accents evenly.
Tip: Use comma widths for mixed pots.
Full inside length you can use for decor.
Breathing room near brackets and edges.
Pots, planters, trays, books, or accents.
Use the widest diameter for round pots.
Optional. Overrides average width per item order.

Helpful for airflow around herbs and leafy plants.
If the shelf is tight, you’ll see a warning.
Only applies when item count is 1.

Accuracy tip: measure the widest pot, including drip trays.

Example Data Table

Scenario Shelf Length Items Widths Side Margin Computed Gap
Herb pots row 90 cm 6 10 cm average 5 cm 6.00 cm
Mixed planters 36 in 5 6, 7.5, 8, 6.5, 7 in 2 in 2.25 in
Single feature plant 60 cm 1 18 cm 6 cm Centered

Example gaps assume even spacing using the formula below.

Formula Used

First, compute usable shelf length: Usable = Shelf Length − 2 × Side Margin.

Then sum all item widths: Total Width = w₁ + w₂ + … + wₙ.

For two or more items, the even gap is: Gap = (Usable − Total Width) ÷ (n − 1). For one item, the calculator centers it on usable space.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Measure the shelf length you can actually use.
  2. Choose a side margin to avoid cramped edges.
  3. Enter item count and average width, or paste custom widths.
  4. Enable a minimum gap when plants need airflow.
  5. Press Calculate Spacing to see gaps and positions.
  6. Download the CSV or PDF to keep a layout reference.

Why spacing matters for plant health

Balanced shelf spacing improves light access and reduces leaf crowding for indoor herbs and seedlings. When containers touch, moisture lingers, airflow drops, and mildew pressure can rise. Predictable gaps also protect foliage from abrasion as you rotate pots for even growth. For decorative pieces, consistent spacing creates a calmer rhythm, making a small shelf look intentional rather than cluttered and hard to maintain.

Measure widths and margins correctly

Start with accurate measurements before you plan aesthetics. Use the widest diameter of each pot, including drip trays, rim flare, and hanging handles. Measure the shelf’s usable interior length, not the wall-to-wall distance. Reserve side margins to avoid brackets, corner trim, and uneven wall clearance. If items vary, list custom widths in placement order for the most realistic layout.

Use the layout table for placement

Use the calculator outputs as a placement map. It provides an even gap value and left and right edges for every item, which you can mark with painter’s tape. Distribute visual weight by placing taller, heavier plants near the ends and lower accents toward the center. Keep trailing foliage away from book spines and outlets, and leave room for watering can access.

Set gaps for airflow and lighting

Minimum gap controls help you meet airflow targets for basil, mint, and dense foliage in humid rooms. If the shelf is too short, the warning shows the minimum shelf length needed to preserve your chosen gap. This prevents forcing a tight arrangement that later requires constant shuffling. When using grow lights, increase gaps slightly to reduce leaf overlap and improve photon distribution.

Document and repeat your layout

Export tools make spacing plans easier to share and repeat. Use the CSV to send precise positions to a client, teammate, or future self during seasonal refreshes. The PDF printout works as a quick placement checklist beside your potting bench. Recalculate whenever you change containers, add saucers, or swap decor, so the shelf remains balanced, clean, and consistent. For retail displays, keep a copy for staff resets, and note plant names, watering dates, rotation direction, across busy days and shifting light in each season.

FAQs

What does “usable shelf length” mean?

It is the shelf length available after subtracting left and right side margins. Use it when edges have brackets, trim, or you want breathing room.

Should I measure pot diameter or the base?

Measure the widest point the item occupies, including drip trays, rim flare, or handles. This prevents leaves and saucers from colliding.

How do I use the custom widths list?

Enter widths in the same order you plan to place items, separated by commas. Any missing values automatically fall back to the average width.

What if the calculated gap is negative?

A negative gap means the items plus margins do not fit. Reduce item widths, reduce the item count, or increase shelf length until the gap becomes positive.

Why enforce a minimum gap?

Minimum gaps help maintain airflow, reduce moisture buildup, and leave space for watering. If the shelf is too short, the tool shows the minimum length needed.

Can I mix decor objects with plants?

Yes. Treat each object as an item and use its widest footprint. Consider extra clearance for trailing foliage and for removing objects during watering and pruning.
