Standardized 4-variable MDRD equation:
eGFR = 175 × (Serum Creatinine in mg/dL)^-1.154 × (Age)^-0.203 × 0.742 if female × 1.212 if the legacy Black coefficient is applied
- eGFR is reported in mL/min/1.73 m².
- Serum creatinine can be entered in mg/dL or µmol/L.
- Age is entered in years.
- Sex factor adjusts the estimate in the traditional MDRD equation.

1) What does the MDRD calculator estimate?
It estimates glomerular filtration rate from serum creatinine, age, and sex. The result is an estimate of kidney filtration, not a direct measurement.
2) Why is the result called estimated GFR?
The value comes from an equation, not a direct filtration test. Lab method differences, muscle mass, illness, and timing can all affect creatinine-based estimates.
3) Why is the historical race coefficient optional here?
Older MDRD workflows used it, but many current labs prefer race-free reporting. This toggle supports legacy comparison without forcing a race-based output.
4) Is this calculator suitable for children?
No. MDRD is an adult equation. Pediatric kidney assessment uses different formulas and clinical standards.
5) Can I use this result to diagnose kidney disease?
Not by itself. Diagnosis usually depends on repeat results, urine findings, symptoms, imaging, and clinical history over time.
6) Why can a normal-looking result still need follow-up?
Higher eGFR values do not rule out kidney problems if albuminuria or other kidney damage markers are present. Context matters.
7) Why is uACR included if MDRD uses creatinine?
uACR helps describe albuminuria category. Combining eGFR stage with urine findings gives a more useful kidney risk picture than eGFR alone.
8) Why might CKD-EPI be mentioned beside MDRD?
Many current laboratories use newer equations for reporting. MDRD remains useful for historical comparisons, older records, and understanding legacy values.
