Formula Used

This monitor blends GPA projection, completion pace, and engagement evidence into one advising view.

Current Quality Points = Current GPA × Credits Attempted Projected Cumulative GPA = (Current Quality Points + Expected Term GPA × Planned Credits) ÷ (Credits Attempted + Planned Credits) Current Completion Rate = (Credits Completed ÷ Credits Attempted) × 100 Projected Completion Rate = (Credits Completed + Expected Earned Credits) ÷ (Credits Attempted + Planned Credits) × 100 Assessment Average = Assignment Average × 0.35 + Midterm Score × 0.25 + Expected Final Exam Score × 0.40 Progress Score = 35% GPA Metric + 20% Projected Completion + 10% Attendance + 10% Assignments + 15% Assessment Average + 10% Engagement − Warning Penalty Required Term GPA = (Target GPA × Projected Attempted Credits − Current Quality Points) ÷ Planned Credits

The progress score is capped between 0 and 100. Warning penalty equals three points for each warning flag, up to 30 points.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What does the progress score represent?

It is a weighted indicator combining projected GPA, credit completion, attendance, graded work, engagement, and warning penalties. It helps advisors compare academic momentum across students consistently.

2. Can this monitor replace official institutional policies?

No. It supports advising and planning decisions. Institutions should still use official progression rules, probation thresholds, catalog requirements, and approved retention procedures.

3. Why does the calculator ask for expected earned credits?

Earned credits can differ from planned credits when withdrawals, failures, or incomplete grades are possible. This value improves projected completion accuracy.

4. What if the required term GPA is above 4.00?

That means the target cumulative GPA cannot be reached this term under a standard 4.00 scale. Consider extending the timeline or revising the target.

5. How should I set the engagement score?

Use a consistent campus method, such as LMS activity, advising attendance, participation, tutoring usage, or faculty feedback. Keep the same scale across reviews.

6. Are warning flags always academic?

Not always. They may include missed assignments, repeated absences, probation markers, administrative holds, or other indicators that weaken student momentum.

7. Can I use this for cohort reviews?

Yes. Advisors can apply the same framework to multiple students, export summaries, and compare projected outcomes during progression meetings or support planning.

8. Does the monitor work for graduate programs?

Yes, provided the grading scale matches the model. You can adapt engagement standards, warning definitions, and target GPA expectations for graduate settings.
