Large screens show three columns.Example Data Table
| Input | Example Value | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Total Investment | $50,000 | Starting lump sum available for ETF purchases. |
| Monthly Contribution | $1,000 | Recurring amount invested using the same target weights. |
| Age | 35 | Helps tilt the model toward growth or defense. |
| Risk Tolerance | 7 | Higher values raise the equity target. |
| Time Horizon | 15 years | Longer horizons support larger stock exposure. |
| Emergency Fund | 6 months | Lower reserves can increase cash and reduce risk. |
| International Share | 25% | Sets the non-US slice inside equity. |
| Bond Floor | 15% | Guarantees a defensive minimum allocation. |
Formula Used
Base equity target = 35 + (risk tolerance × 5) + (time horizon × 1.5) − (age × 0.35) + emergency adjustment.
Emergency adjustment = +5 when reserves are at least six months, 0 when reserves are three to under six months, and −8 when reserves are under three months.
Bond weight = 100 − equity weight − cash reserve − satellite sleeve, while never falling below the chosen bond floor.
REIT weight = equity weight × REIT share. Remaining equity is split between US and international holdings.
International weight = remaining equity × international share. US weight = remaining equity − international weight.
Portfolio metrics use weighted averages: Σ(weight × return), Σ(weight × yield), and Σ(weight × expense ratio).
Dollar allocation = total investment × asset weight. Monthly allocation = monthly contribution × asset weight.

FAQs
1. What does this ETF allocation calculator estimate?
It estimates a model portfolio across stocks, international funds, bonds, REITs, cash, and a satellite sleeve. It also shows dollar allocations, monthly funding targets, weighted return assumptions, dividend yield, fees, and rebalance ranges.
2. Are the projected returns guaranteed?
No. The return, yield, and fee figures are planning assumptions only. Markets move unpredictably, ETF compositions change, and actual outcomes can differ materially from modeled values in both strong and weak market periods.
3. Why does age affect the suggested equity target?
Age is used as a simple risk-capacity factor. Younger investors often tolerate volatility longer, while older investors may need more stability and income. The model reduces equity exposure gradually as age rises.
4. What is the bond floor used for?
The bond floor sets a minimum defensive allocation. Even when the growth model prefers a very high stock weight, the calculator preserves at least that selected percentage in bonds for stability.
5. What is a satellite allocation?
A satellite sleeve is a smaller tactical position outside your core holdings. Investors often use it for themes, sector tilts, innovation funds, or higher-conviction ideas without overpowering the full portfolio.
6. How should I interpret the rebalance range?
The rebalance range shows a tolerance band around each target weight. When a holding drifts outside that band, you may review whether to buy, trim, or redirect new contributions back toward target.
7. Can I replace the default tickers?
Yes. The ticker fields are editable. You can swap in ETFs you already own or prefer. The allocation logic stays the same, while the output labels update to match your chosen symbols.
8. Is this suitable for tax or personal financial advice?
No. This tool is for educational portfolio planning. Taxes, account type, regional rules, and personal goals can change the right allocation. Use professional advice when making real investment decisions.
