Example Data Table

Run Length (mm) Width (mm) Height (mm) Center Strips Edge Strips Boxes Roll Length (m)
A 400 300 250 1 2 120 100
B 500 320 280 1 2 80 120
C 360 240 220 2 2 150 90

Formula Used

Center strip length = carton length + 2 × carton height + top overlap + bottom overlap.

Edge strip length = carton width + 2 × carton height + top overlap + bottom overlap.

Total tape per box = (center strip length × center strips) + (edge strip length × edge strips).

Net tape = tape per box × total boxes.

Gross tape = net tape × (1 + waste percent / 100).

Rolls required = ceiling(gross tape ÷ roll length).

Estimated cost = rolls required × cost per roll.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter carton length, width, and height in millimeters.
  2. Set the top and bottom overlap allowance.
  3. Enter the number of center and edge strips.
  4. Fill in total boxes for the production batch.
  5. Add waste percentage for setup, trimming, and operator variation.
  6. Enter tape roll length and roll cost.
  7. Click the calculate button.
  8. Review tape requirement, rolls needed, cost, and reserve balance.
  9. Download the results as CSV or PDF.

FAQs

1. What does this calculator estimate?

This calculator estimates tape length per carton, total tape demand, waste allowance, required rolls, approximate boxes per roll, and estimated material cost.

2. Why is carton height included?

Tape usually runs over the top seam and down the carton sides. Height helps estimate that extra travel distance on each strip.

3. What are center strips and edge strips?

Center strips seal the main top seam. Edge strips reinforce side seams or extra closure points for heavier or sensitive cartons.

4. Why should I add waste percentage?

Waste covers startup loss, uneven cuts, operator variation, tape tail loss, and minor rework. It prevents under-ordering during production planning.

5. How accurate is boxes per roll?

It is an estimate based on calculated tape per box and stated roll length. Real output varies with machine setup, tails, and roll changeovers.

6. Can I use this for manual and machine sealing?

Yes. Adjust strip counts, overlap, and waste percentage to reflect manual dispensers, semi-automatic sealers, or fully automatic carton sealing lines.

7. Does tape width affect length need?

Tape width does not change strip length directly. It is still useful for documentation, packaging standards, and print or strength requirements.

8. When should I buy extra rolls?

Buy extra rolls when production is critical, demand is variable, or downtime is costly. Safety stock reduces shortages during peak runs.
