Playfair Cipher Calculator
Plotly Graph
This graph shows letter frequencies in the output text.
Example Data Table
| Keyword | Input Text | Prepared Text | Mode | Output Text |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MONARCHY | INSTRUMENTS | INSTRUMENTSX | Encrypt | GATLMZCLRQXA |
| SECURE | HELLO WORLD | HELXLOWORLDX | Encrypt | Example output varies by matrix |
| MONARCHY | GATLMZCLRQXA | GATLMZCLRQXA | Decrypt | INSTRUMENTSX |
Formula Used
The Playfair method transforms letter pairs. It uses position rules, not arithmetic equations. The matrix and digraph rules define every substitution step.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter a keyword to build the Playfair matrix.
- Select encrypt or decrypt mode.
- Choose a filler letter, usually X.
- Enter your message in the text box.
- Click submit to generate the prepared text.
- Review the result, matrix, and digraph breakdown.
- Use CSV or PDF export for documentation.
- Study the chart to inspect output letter patterns.
FAQs
1. What does the Playfair cipher do?
It encrypts pairs of letters using a 5×5 keyword matrix. Each pair follows row, column, or rectangle rules. This makes it stronger than simple one-letter substitution methods.
2. Why are I and J combined?
A 5×5 matrix holds only 25 letters. English has 26 letters. Combining I and J solves that space problem while keeping the matrix structure consistent.
3. Why is a filler letter added?
A filler separates repeated letters in one pair. It also completes odd-length messages. X is common, but another valid letter can be used in many teaching examples.
4. Can this tool decrypt ciphertext?
Yes. Switch the mode to decrypt. The tool then reverses row and column movements while keeping the rectangle rule unchanged for each digraph.
5. Does spacing or punctuation matter?
No. The tool removes spaces, symbols, and numbers before processing. Only letters are used in the matrix transformation steps.
6. Is Playfair still secure today?
No. It is mainly educational now. Modern computers can break it with frequency analysis and pattern attacks. It remains useful for learning classical cryptography concepts.
7. What does the chart show?
The Plotly chart displays output letter frequencies. It helps users inspect distribution patterns and compare encrypted text structure across different keywords and messages.
8. Can I use any keyword?
Yes, as long as it contains letters. Duplicate letters are removed automatically. J becomes I during matrix construction to match classic Playfair rules.
