Formula Used

1) Reference Units

Reference Units = Notional Amount ÷ Initial Reference Price

2) Price Return Amount

Price Return Amount = Notional × ((Final Price - Initial Price) ÷ Initial Price)

3) Total Return Amount

Total Return Amount = Price Return Amount + Dividends / Income

4) Financing Amount

Financing Amount = Notional × (Floating Rate + Spread) × (Days ÷ Day Count Basis) + Upfront Fee

5) Net Settlement

For Receive Total Return = Total Return Amount - Financing Amount

For Pay Total Return = Financing Amount - Total Return Amount

6) Break-even Final Price

Break-even Final Price = Initial Price × [1 + ((Financing Amount - Dividends) ÷ Notional)]

FAQs

1) What does this calculator measure?

It estimates the economic result of a total return swap by combining reference asset performance, dividends or income, financing costs, and position direction into one clear settlement figure.

2) What is a receive total return position?

A receive total return position benefits when the reference asset gains value or pays income. The calculator subtracts financing costs from that total return to estimate net settlement.

3) What is a pay total return position?

A pay total return position does the opposite. It generally benefits when financing inflows exceed the asset’s total return obligation across the chosen holding period.

4) Why do I need the day count basis?

The day count basis converts annual financing rates into period costs. Contracts often use 360 or 365-day conventions, and the chosen basis changes the financing amount slightly.

5) Does the calculator include collateral or margin?

No. This version focuses on return math, funding cost, and settlement direction. It does not model collateral posting, variation margin, haircuts, or counterparty credit adjustments.

6) What does the break-even final price show?

It shows the final reference price needed to offset financing cost after considering dividends or income. At that point, the modeled net settlement is approximately zero.

7) Why is there a scenario chart?

The chart helps you test sensitivity. Instead of seeing only one outcome, you can view how net settlement changes as the final reference price moves across a wider range.

8) Is this suitable for live trading decisions?

It is better used for planning, education, and quick comparisons. Live decisions should also consider contract terms, funding resets, legal definitions, taxes, collateral mechanics, and market data.
