Example Data Table

These sample rows show how guided inputs map to different word-problem categories.

Problem Type Scenario Known Inputs Missing Value Expected Result
Percentage What is 18% of 250? Whole = 250, Rate = 18 Part 45
Proportion 3/5 = x/20 A = 3, B = 5, D = 20 C 12
Distance A car moves 180 km in 3 hours. Distance = 180, Time = 3 Speed 60 km/time
Simple Interest Find interest on 2,000 at 5% for 3 years. Principal = 2000, Rate = 5, Time = 3 Interest 300
Work Rate Two workers finish alone in 4 and 6 hours. Worker 1 = 4, Worker 2 = 6 Combined Time 2.4 hours
Linear Cost Fee is 15 plus 7 per item for 8 items. Fixed = 15, Rate = 7, Quantity = 8 Total Cost 71

Formula Used

Each problem family uses a standard math relationship. The calculator chooses the correct rearrangement from your selected unknown.

1) Percentage Problems

Core formula: Part = Whole × Rate / 100

Rearrangements: Whole = Part ÷ (Rate / 100) and Rate = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100.

2) Proportion Problems

Core formula: A / B = C / D

Cross multiplication gives A × D = B × C. The calculator rearranges this to isolate the missing term.

3) Distance, Speed, and Time

Core formula: Distance = Speed × Time

Rearrangements: Speed = Distance ÷ Time and Time = Distance ÷ Speed.

4) Simple Interest

Core formula: I = P × R × T

Here R is entered as a percentage and converted to decimal during calculation.

5) Work Rate

Core formula: 1 / T = 1 / t1 + 1 / t2

The combined rate is the sum of individual rates. Taking the reciprocal returns total time.

6) Linear Cost

Core formula: Total = Fixed + Rate × Quantity

This is useful for delivery fees, setup charges, subscriptions, and unit-price scenarios.

FAQs

1) Can this solve every word problem automatically?

No. It solves common structured categories. Use the closest problem family, then map the story values into the labeled fields.

2) Why is the answer shown above the form?

The layout places results directly below the header. This keeps the final answer visible before the input section, which helps quick review and export.

3) What does the Plotly graph show?

The chart visualizes the relationship behind the current formula. It also highlights your solved result so the pattern is easier to understand.

4) When should I use the proportion mode?

Use it when two ratios should stay equal. Examples include recipes, map scales, exchange rates, and similar-size comparisons.

5) Does the interest mode use compound interest?

No. This page uses simple interest only. It follows the direct relation between principal, rate, time, and interest earned.

6) What unit should I enter?

Enter a short display label like hours, dollars, or kilometers. It appears with the final answer for easier reading.

7) Why do some fields disappear?

Different word-problem types need different counts of known values. The form updates labels and hides unused fields to reduce confusion.

8) Can I save the result outside the browser?

Yes. After solving, use the CSV button for spreadsheets or the PDF button for a quick printable summary.
