FAQs

1) What is the Caprini score used for?

It estimates venous thromboembolism risk in many surgical patients by adding weighted points for common clinical risk factors.

2) Does a higher score guarantee a blood clot?

No. It indicates higher risk, not certainty. Clinical judgment, procedure type, and bleeding risk still matter for prevention decisions.

3) Can I use this for medical (non-surgical) patients?

The tool is widely used in surgical settings. For medical inpatients, other risk models may be preferred depending on your protocol.

4) Why are age and prior DVT weighted heavily?

Older age and previous venous clots are strongly associated with future events, so the model assigns more points to reflect that risk.

5) What if the patient has multiple cancers?

Some protocols score each relevant malignancy episode separately. This page provides a single malignancy checkbox, so document specifics separately.

6) Do I need to tick both “major surgery” fields?

No. Use “major surgery within the last month” for recent past operations, and “major surgery” for the current planned or ongoing procedure time.

7) How should I interpret the prophylaxis text?

It is general guidance only. Always follow your institution’s VTE and bleeding-risk policies and consult a qualified clinician when needed.

8) What do the CSV and PDF downloads include?

They export your most recent calculation: total score, risk level, brief recommendation, and a factor-by-factor points breakdown for easy recordkeeping.
