Formula Used
1. Monthly usage for time-based activities = Daily hours × Billing days × Preset data rate.
2. Streaming usage = Daily streaming hours × Billing days × Quality rate × Simultaneous streams.
3. Weekly backup conversion = Weekly backup GB × 4.345.
4. Base monthly total = Sum of all usage categories.
5. Buffered total = Base monthly total × (1 + Safety margin ÷ 100).
6. Estimated overage cost = Max(Buffered total − Plan cap, 0) × Overage cost per GB.

FAQs
1. What does this calculator estimate?
It estimates total monthly network data usage by combining daily activity habits, one-time downloads, weekly backups, device background syncing, and a safety margin.
2. Why should I add a safety margin?
A safety margin covers irregular spikes such as guest devices, surprise updates, cloud resyncs, weekend binge streaming, or hotspot sessions you forgot to enter.
3. Does streaming quality really change usage that much?
Yes. Higher resolutions use much more data per hour. Moving from SD to HD or 4K can multiply monthly consumption very quickly.
4. Is gaming traffic the same as downloading games?
No. Online play usually uses modest hourly traffic, while game installs, patches, and updates can consume tens or even hundreds of gigabytes.
5. Why include connected devices and idle background usage?
Many devices quietly use data for app refreshes, cloud sync, telemetry, notifications, smart home activity, and software checks, even when nobody is actively using them.
6. Can this help me choose a better internet plan?
Yes. Compare your buffered total against your current cap. The recommended plan figure helps you shop for a package with practical headroom.
7. Are the built-in usage rates exact?
They are planning estimates. Real usage varies by codec, platform, compression, app settings, device type, and whether video auto-plays frequently.
8. What if my connection is unlimited?
Set the plan cap to zero. The calculator will still estimate your monthly total, average daily demand, category mix, and a sensible capacity target.
