Formula Used

This calculator supports three planning methods for milk volume estimates. It keeps the process flexible for routine home tracking.

Method Formula Explanation
Age-based default Daily Volume = Weight × Default mL/kg/day × Appetite Factor The default target changes by age. Younger infants usually need different milk volumes than older infants.
Custom target Daily Volume = Weight × Custom mL/kg/day × Appetite Factor Use this when you already have a target from your own feeding plan.
Energy-based Daily Volume = (Weight × kcal/kg/day × Appetite Factor) ÷ kcal/mL This method converts calorie goals into milk volume using the selected milk or formula density.
Per feed Per Feed = Daily Volume ÷ Feeds per Day It spreads the full day’s intake across the planned number of feeds.
Ounces Ounces per Feed = mL per Feed ÷ 29.5735 This converts metric volume into fluid ounces for bottle tracking.
The age-based defaults used here are simple planning values: 60, 90, 120, 150, 150, 120, and 100 mL/kg/day across increasing age bands.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the infant’s current weight in kilograms.
  2. Enter age and choose days, weeks, or months.
  3. Select how many feeds usually happen each day.
  4. Choose a calculation mode that matches your planning style.
  5. Select the milk or formula type for calorie estimates.
  6. Adjust appetite factor if the infant is taking more or less than usual.
  7. Press the calculate button to show daily and per-feed results above the form.
  8. Use the export buttons to save the result as CSV or PDF.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does this calculator estimate?

It estimates daily milk volume, per-feed volume, ounce equivalents, and approximate calorie intake based on weight, age, schedule, and selected planning method.

2) Is this meant for breast milk and formula?

Yes. You can choose breast milk, standard formula, fortified formula, high-calorie formula, or your own custom calorie density for volume and calorie estimates.

3) Why are there different calculation modes?

Different families track intake differently. Some prefer age-based volume rules, some follow a custom volume target, and others work backward from calorie goals.

4) What is appetite factor?

Appetite factor adjusts the estimate upward or downward. It helps with routine planning when an infant is taking less, feeding normally, or showing stronger hunger cues.

5) Does this replace medical advice?

No. It is an educational planning tool. Feeding tolerance, growth, wet diapers, and clinician guidance matter more than any calculator result alone.

6) Can I use it for older infants taking solids?

Yes, but use caution. Once solids contribute meaningfully, milk volume may fall while total nutrition remains appropriate for the infant’s stage.

7) Why does the result show a range?

The range gives a simple planning buffer around the estimate. Day-to-day intake can vary, especially during growth spurts, illness, or shifting sleep patterns.

8) What should I export with CSV or PDF?

Export the result summary when you want to review trends, share routine plans, or keep a simple record of estimated daily and per-feed volumes.

Important Note

This tool is designed for home planning and education. If an infant has poor weight gain, vomiting, dehydration concerns, special medical needs, or feeding intolerance, use direct clinical guidance.
