Use pre-pregnancy weight for the energy estimate. The planner then adds trimester calories and builds a sample day around your chosen meal frequency.

Example data table

Profile Trimester Activity Plan style Typical output focus
Age 29, 62 kg, 165 cm Second Lightly active 5 eating times Balanced calories, iron-rich lunch, calcium snacks
Age 34, 72 kg, 168 cm Third Moderately active 6 eating times Higher calories, gentler late snack, hydration reminder
Age 24, 58 kg, 160 cm First Sedentary 3 meals Nausea-aware breakfast and steady protein spacing

Formula used

1) Basal energy estimate: The calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation for women.

BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age) - 161

2) Maintenance calories: The tool multiplies BMR by an activity factor.

Maintenance Calories = BMR × Activity Factor

3) Pregnancy energy addition: The planner adds trimester calories for a singleton pregnancy.

Target Calories = Maintenance Calories + Trimester Addition

4) Protein planning target: The planner uses the larger of the pregnancy minimum or a body-weight estimate.

Protein Target = max(71, 1.1 × pre-pregnancy weight in kg)

5) Meal split: Total calories are divided across 3, 5, or 6 eating times using fixed percentage shares selected in the calculator.

Fiber, carbohydrate, water, calcium, iron, folate, iodine, choline, and DHA are displayed as planning targets. Sample menus are heuristic examples, not prescriptions.

Frequently asked questions

1) Is this calculator a medical prescription?

No. It is a structured planning tool. It helps organize calories, protein, and meal timing, but it does not diagnose, treat, or replace personalized clinical nutrition advice.

2) Why are first-trimester calories often similar to baseline?

Many people do not need extra calories early in pregnancy. Appetite, nausea, and individual conditions still matter, so your clinician may suggest a different approach.

3) Should I use pre-pregnancy or current weight?

Use pre-pregnancy weight for this planner. That keeps the energy estimate more stable and avoids overstating needs as pregnancy weight changes over time.

4) Can vegetarians use this calculator?

Yes. The vegetarian mode shifts sample meals toward lentils, beans, dairy, tofu, paneer, nuts, seeds, and fortified foods while still highlighting key pregnancy nutrients.

5) What if I have gestational diabetes?

Use this only as a rough starting point. Gestational diabetes needs individualized carbohydrate distribution, glucose monitoring, and clinician-directed meal planning.

6) Why does the tool show nutrient targets?

Pregnancy meal planning is not just about calories. Protein, iron, folate, calcium, iodine, choline, fiber, and hydration all influence the quality of the daily plan.

7) Can I use the PDF for appointments?

Yes. The PDF summarizes the estimate, nutrient targets, and sample menu. It is useful for discussion with a doctor, midwife, or dietitian.

8) Does the sample menu cover supplements?

Not fully. Many people still need a prenatal vitamin or targeted supplements. Review your supplement plan with your clinician, especially for iron, folate, iodine, vitamin D, or DHA.
