Example data table

Visit Age (months) Weight (kg) Height (cm) Head circumference (cm)
Visit 1 18 10.80 81.00 47.00
Visit 2 24 11.90 85.60 48.10
Current 30 13.20 90.10 49.00

Formula used

1. Unit conversion: pounds are converted to kilograms and inches are converted to centimeters before any calculations begin.

2. Body mass index: BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in meters)2.

3. Reference interpolation: the calculator linearly interpolates age-specific percentile anchors between stored month points for each sex and metric.

4. Estimated spread: SD ≈ (P95 − P5) ÷ 3.29, using the distance between the 5th and 95th percentiles.

5. Z-score estimate: z ≈ (measurement − median) ÷ SD.

6. Percentile estimate: percentile ≈ Φ(z) × 100, where Φ is the cumulative standard normal distribution.

7. Growth velocity: change in weight or height ÷ months between the two latest visits.

Frequently asked questions

1. What does the percentile mean?

A percentile shows how a measurement compares with similar children of the same sex and age. The 50th percentile is near the middle of the reference curve.

2. Is a high percentile always better?

No. Higher is not automatically better. Consistent growth over time often matters more than being at one specific percentile on a single visit.

3. Why include previous visits?

Trend points help reveal growth direction. A steady pattern is usually more informative than one isolated measurement, especially during rapid toddler development.

4. Why does the calculator show BMI too?

BMI offers another quick screening view based on weight and height together. It should be interpreted carefully and alongside overall growth patterns.

5. Can I use inches and pounds?

Yes. The page converts pounds to kilograms and inches to centimeters automatically before computing percentiles and chart positions.

6. What if head circumference is blank?

The calculator still works. Head circumference is optional, and the report simply skips that percentile when no value is entered.

7. Is this suitable for clinical diagnosis?

No. This page is an educational estimator. Clinical decisions should rely on full official growth datasets, proper measurement technique, and professional assessment.

8. Why is the age range limited?

This version is tuned for toddlers from 12 to 36 months so the chart, interpolation, and interpretation stay focused on one developmental window.
