Formula used

Total income = Monthly income + Other income

Planned commitments = Fixed expenses + Savings goal + Debt payment + Emergency fund amount + Irregular expense reserve

Discretionary cash before buffer = Total income + Starting rollover - Planned commitments

Buffer reserve = Discretionary cash before buffer × Buffer percentage

Envelope pool = Discretionary cash before buffer - Buffer reserve

Category allocation = Envelope pool × Category weight / Sum of all category weights

Weekly limit = Category allocation / Weeks per month

Remaining balance = Category allocation - Actual spending

Coverage ratio = (Total income + Positive rollover) / Planned commitments × 100

FAQs

1. What is envelope budgeting?

Envelope budgeting assigns available cash to spending categories before the month begins. Each envelope gets a limit, which makes overspending easier to spot and control.

2. Why use weights instead of fixed category amounts?

Weights let you rebalance quickly when income changes. The calculator converts your category priorities into proportional allocations without forcing you to rewrite every budget amount manually.

3. What should I enter as fixed expenses?

Include bills and obligations that usually stay predictable, such as rent, insurance, school fees, subscriptions, and minimum loan payments. Leave variable daily spending for envelope categories.

4. What does the buffer percentage do?

The buffer holds back part of your discretionary cash before category allocation. It creates a margin for price changes, forgotten purchases, or uneven spending patterns.

5. Can I use rollover balances?

Yes. Starting rollover adds leftover cash from the previous cycle to this month’s plan. It is useful when you intentionally carry forward unspent category balances.

6. What happens if my commitments exceed income?

The calculator shows a shortfall warning and sets the envelope pool to zero. Reduce commitments, raise income, or lower savings targets until the plan becomes workable.

7. How is the weekly limit useful?

Weekly limits break each monthly envelope into smaller checkpoints. This helps you pace groceries, travel, or fun spending instead of discovering problems at month end.

8. Can this calculator work for cashless spending?

Yes. You can treat each envelope as a digital spending bucket. The method still works when purchases happen by card, wallet app, or bank transfer.
