Drag Coefficient Estimate Calculator

Find drag coefficient using force, area, speed, density. Switch targets to solve any related variable. Save outputs as CSV or PDF in seconds today.

Calculator Inputs

Provide the other four quantities. The target field can be left blank.
Recommended: use projected frontal area for bluff bodies and wingspan-based reference area for airfoils.

Formula Used

The drag force model relates force to flow speed and reference area:

F_d = (1/2) · ρ · v² · C_d · A

Rearrangements are applied to solve for the selected target. Internally, all quantities are converted to SI for consistency.

How to Use This Calculator

  • Select which variable you want to compute.
  • Enter the other four values and choose their units.
  • Click Calculate to view results above the form.
  • Use Download CSV or Download PDF for reporting.
  • If results look unusual, confirm area definition and steady speed.

Example Data Table

Scenario F_d (N) v (m/s) ρ (kg/m³) A (m²) Estimated C_d
Small bluff body 3.20 12.0 1.225 0.015 0.97
Streamlined casing 1.05 20.0 1.180 0.010 0.44
Flat plate broadside 8.50 10.0 1.225 0.020 1.39
Examples are illustrative and depend on flow regime and surface condition.
Use consistent measurement conditions for best estimates.
