Calculate dimensional and billable weight

This also updates the common default divisor.
Measured outer length before extra allowance.
Measured outer width before extra allowance.
Measured outer height before extra allowance.
Enter the true mass of one packed piece.
Use identical-piece quantities for fast scenario planning.
Editable for account, lane, or service exceptions.
Use 0 for exact values. Common choices are 0.5 or 1.
Example: USD, EUR, GBP, PKR.
Add padding, corner boards, or outer wrap.
Use for void fill or protective side clearance.
Useful when the final carton height increases after sealing.
Optional quote estimate input.
Applied after the base freight estimate.
Optional handling, remote area, or admin amount.

Example data table

System Dimensions Actual weight Divisor Dimensional weight Billable weight
Metric 50 × 40 × 30 cm 9.00 kg 5000 12.00 kg 12.00 kg
Metric 30 × 25 × 20 cm 6.00 kg 5000 3.00 kg 6.00 kg
Imperial 24 × 18 × 16 in 18.00 lb 139 49.73 lb 49.73 lb

These examples show how bulky cartons can price above actual mass when dimensional weight becomes the larger figure.

Formula used

1) Effective dimension
Effective dimension = Measured dimension + Extra allowance
2) Volume per piece
Volume = Effective length × Effective width × Effective height
3) Dimensional weight per piece
Dimensional weight = Volume ÷ Divisor
4) Raw chargeable weight per piece
Raw chargeable weight = Higher of actual weight and dimensional weight
5) Rounded billable weight per piece
Rounded billable weight = Round raw chargeable weight upward to the chosen increment
6) Estimated shipment cost
Base freight = Total billable weight × Rate per unit
Grand total = Base freight + Fuel surcharge + Fixed surcharge

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose metric or imperial units first so the divisor and rounding suggestions match your working system.
  2. Enter outer carton dimensions and the actual packed weight for one piece.
  3. Add quantity when all pieces are identical and need a total shipment estimate.
  4. Use extra dimension allowances for foam, edge protection, sleeves, or final carton growth after sealing.
  5. Adjust the divisor only when your service, account, or contract uses a different volumetric rule.
  6. Optionally enter rate and surcharge values to model a quick landed freight estimate and export the result.

FAQs

1. What is dimensional weight?

Dimensional weight converts package volume into a weight equivalent. Carriers use it to price large, light cartons that consume aircraft or vehicle space beyond what their actual mass suggests.

2. Why can billable weight exceed actual weight?

A shipment may be physically light but still occupy costly space. When the dimensional figure is higher than the actual figure, carriers commonly charge using the larger value.

3. Why is the divisor editable?

Different service types, contracts, lanes, or internal quoting rules may apply a different divisor. Keeping it editable makes the calculator suitable for audits, planning, and account-specific quoting.

4. Should I measure inner or outer dimensions?

Use final outer packed dimensions. Charges usually depend on the space the completed shipment occupies, not the empty carton’s inner cavity or product-only dimensions.

5. What does the rounding increment do?

It rounds billable weight upward to your chosen step, such as 0.5 or 1. This helps match internal rating rules or customer quoting practices where exact decimals are not used.

6. Can I estimate shipping charges here?

Yes. Enter a rate per billable unit, then optional fuel and fixed surcharges. The estimate is useful for screening scenarios before requesting a final carrier quote.

7. What does the space efficiency ratio mean?

It compares actual weight to dimensional weight. Values below 1 suggest a bulky shipment. Values above 1 suggest a denser shipment where actual mass is more likely to dominate billing.

8. Can I use this for multiple identical cartons?

Yes. Enter the number of identical pieces in the quantity field. The calculator multiplies the per-piece result to show total actual, dimensional, and billable shipment weight.
