How the estimate is built
The calculator uses a logistic win model. It starts with the live score margin, then adds remaining-possession value, rating edge, home-court value, momentum, turnover margin, and timeout leverage.
Projected margin = score differential + possession edge + remaining rating edge + remaining home-court edge + momentum edge + turnover edge + timeout edge.
Win probability = 100 ÷ (1 + e-1.70 × z), where z equals projected margin divided by game-state volatility.
Game-state volatility increases when more possessions remain. That keeps early-game estimates moderate and lets late-game leads become more decisive.

1. What does this calculator estimate?
It estimates the chance that the selected team wins from the current game state. The model blends score margin, time remaining, possession, pace, team strength, momentum, turnovers, and timeout leverage.
2. Why does possession matter?
A current possession can be worth over one point in expected value. Late in close games, that small edge can materially shift win probability.
3. How should I choose team strength ratings?
Use a consistent power rating system, such as Elo, proprietary team grades, or betting-market ratings. Consistent inputs matter more than the exact scale.
4. Is this useful for coaches?
Yes. Coaches can compare timeout leverage, possession value, and late-game pressure. It helps frame whether a situation is stable or still highly volatile.
5. Can bettors use it?
It can support live-game analysis, but it should not be the only input. Injuries, foul trouble, lineup quality, and bookmaker limits can still matter greatly.
6. Why does probability stay moderate early?
Early in the game, many possessions remain. More time means more scoring paths, so the model deliberately keeps estimates less extreme.
7. What does the swing score mean?
Swing score summarizes how quickly the outlook can change. Tight games with little time left often show high leverage and larger probability swings per possession.
8. Does the calculator guarantee a result?
No. It is an estimate, not a certainty. Basketball includes randomness, strategy changes, officiating variance, and shooting streaks that no simple model fully captures.
