Calculator Inputs
Formula Used
- Net proceeds = Quantity × Unit Price − Fees (if enabled).
- Cost basis (lot) = Quantity matched × Lot cost-per-unit (fees may increase basis on buys).
- Capital gain/loss = Net proceeds − Cost basis.
- Holding period = Days between acquired date and disposal date.
- Income value = Quantity × Unit Price (taxed at the income rate).
- Estimated tax = ST gains × ST rate + LT gains × LT rate + income × income rate.
Rules differ by country. This tool provides a configurable estimate, not legal advice.
How to Use
- Pick a cost-basis method that matches your reporting policy.
- Set your tax rates and the long-term holding threshold days.
- Add transactions in date order: buys first, then sells/spends/swaps.
- For swaps, enter both SWAP_OUT and SWAP_IN rows.
- Click calculate, review warnings, then download CSV/PDF reports.
If you see “missing basis” warnings, add the earlier acquisitions for that asset.

FAQs
1) What counts as a taxable crypto event?
Selling for fiat, swapping one coin for another, spending crypto, and receiving income rewards are commonly taxable. Transfers between your own wallets usually are not taxable, but fees and records still matter.
2) How does FIFO vs LIFO vs HIFO change results?
These methods decide which purchase lots are matched to a sale. Different matching changes cost basis, so gains and taxes can shift. Use the method allowed in your jurisdiction and apply it consistently across the year.
3) Why do I see “missing basis” warnings?
A sale or spend happened without enough earlier buys recorded for that asset. The calculator assumes zero basis for the unmatched quantity, which can overstate gains. Add all acquisition transactions before the disposal date.
4) How should I enter a swap on an exchange?
Enter SWAP_OUT for the asset you gave up using its fair market value per unit. Then enter SWAP_IN for the asset you received using its fair market value. This creates a taxable disposal and a new basis lot.
5) Do fees reduce taxable gains?
Often, fees can increase your cost basis on buys and reduce proceeds on sells, which can lower gains. Rules vary by region and fee type. Use the “Include fees” option to see the difference and keep supporting documentation.
6) How are staking or mining rewards handled?
Rewards are treated as ordinary income at fair market value on the receipt date in many systems. This calculator records income value and also adds that value as cost basis for future disposals of the rewarded coins.
7) Does this calculator handle every tax rule worldwide?
No. Crypto tax rules differ by country and can include special rules, reporting forms, and limits. This tool focuses on configurable capital gains and income estimates. For filing, confirm your local rules or consult a professional.
8) Can I use the CSV or PDF output for my records?
Yes, the downloads provide a practical summary and a lot-level disposal list. They are useful for reviewing numbers and archiving a calculation. Keep original exchange statements too, because audits typically require source transaction evidence.
