Example data table
These sample scenarios show how quality and hours can change monthly totals.
| Scenario | Quality | Hours/day | Days | Streams | Estimated total (GB) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Commute podcasts | Audio only | 1.5 | 22 | 1 | ~1.0 |
| Evening shows | Full HD 1080p | 2.0 | 30 | 1 | ~170 |
| Family weekend movies | Ultra HD 4K | 3.0 | 8 | 2 | ~280 |
Your exact results differ by platform bitrate, codec, and buffering.
Formula used
The calculator estimates streaming usage from an effective bitrate and total viewing time:
- Effective bitrate (Mbps) = video Mbps (after codec and content factors) + audio Mbps.
- Time (seconds) = hours/day × days × 3600.
- Base data = (Mbps × seconds) ÷ 8000 for GB, or ÷ 8192 for GiB.
- Adjustments = base data × streams × (1+overhead%) × (1+buffering%) × (1+extra time%).
- Total data = adjusted streaming data + background data + offline downloads.
Note: real-world usage varies by service, device, and network conditions.
How to use this calculator
- Select a quality preset (or enter a custom bitrate).
