Formula Used
East component: speed × sin(direction). North component: speed × cos(direction).
Drift distance: current speed in knots × elapsed hours. One knot equals one nautical mile per hour.
Projected position: drift components are converted approximately into latitude and longitude changes using 60 nautical miles per degree latitude.
Effective vessel speed: the vessel velocity vector and current velocity vector are added before calculating resultant speed.
How to Use This Ocean Current Tracker
Enter the survey location, coordinates, date, and observation time first. Add the measured current speed and select its input unit. Enter the current direction as degrees true, where zero points north and ninety points east. Record water depth, sensor depth, temperature, sea state, tides, and wind when those readings are available.
Understand the Generated Results
The tracker converts the current into east-west and north-south components. It estimates drift distance from current speed and selected duration. A projected coordinate is also calculated for simple planning exercises. Vessel speed and course can be added to estimate the combined motion caused by water movement. The result panel labels current strength and flags conditions against your custom warning thresholds.
Compare Multiple Observations
Each calculated record can be added to the observation history. The table makes changing current speed, direction, depth, temperature, tide stage, and drift easier to compare. The tracker also summarizes direction trends and the dominant direction from saved readings. These features can support classroom demonstrations, field notes, trip preparation, or research logs.
Export and Review Your Data
Use CSV download for spreadsheets and further analysis. Use PDF download for a portable report containing current results and observation history. Printed reports can be filed with voyage notes or project records. Calculations are simplified estimates and do not account for coastline geometry, bathymetry, turbulence, weather changes, or forecast uncertainty. Always use official marine forecasts, charts, notices, and approved navigation systems for operational decisions.
Example Ocean Current Data
| Location | Speed | Direction | Depth | Temperature | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coastal shelf | 0.7 kn | 090° E | 3 m | 26.8°C | Weak eastward flow |
| Offshore station | 1.6 kn | 145° SE | 5 m | 27.1°C | Moderate southeast flow |
| Channel entrance | 2.8 kn | 210° SW | 2 m | 25.9°C | Strong southwest flow |
| Outer shelf | 3.7 kn | 320° NW | 10 m | 24.6°C | Very strong northwest flow |
Consistent measurements make changing marine conditions easier to interpret. Reliable decisions still require verified professional navigation data sources.
