Formula Used
1) Convert pay to comparable rates
The calculator converts annual, monthly, weekly, or daily pay into monthly, weekly, and daily equivalents.
Monthly rate, Weekly rate, Daily rate
2) Determine service years used
If prorating is enabled, service months are converted into a fractional year.
Service Years = Years + (Months ÷ 12)
3) Calculate severance
The core formula depends on the selected method.
Weeks Method = Weekly Rate × Factor × Service YearsMonths Method = Monthly Rate × Factor × Service YearsFlat Method = Flat Amount
4) Add notice, leave, and extras
Notice pay, unused leave, bonus, commission, and other payouts are added to the package.
Gross Total = Severance + Notice + Leave + Extras
5) Deduct tax and manual items
Taxes are estimated using the gross total, then manual deductions are subtracted.
Tax Amount = Gross Total × Tax RateNet Severance Pay = Gross Total − Tax Amount − Manual Deductions

FAQs
1. What does this severance pay calculator estimate?
It estimates gross and net severance by combining service-based severance, notice pay, unused leave payout, bonuses, commissions, other payouts, taxes, and manual deductions.
2. Can I use annual salary instead of monthly salary?
Yes. The calculator accepts annual, monthly, weekly, or daily pay. It automatically converts the amount into monthly, weekly, and daily equivalents for internal calculations.
3. What is the difference between weeks per year and months per year?
Weeks per year multiplies weekly pay by a selected number of weeks for each service year. Months per year uses monthly pay instead. The correct choice depends on the employer policy or agreement.
4. Why is there a prorate service option?
Some employers or contracts count partial years when calculating severance. Enabling prorating includes the extra months as a fraction of a year, which can increase the severance estimate.
5. Does the calculator apply a legal severance rule automatically?
No. It is a configurable accounting tool. You must enter the correct method, multiplier, cap, and tax assumptions based on the contract, local law, payroll practice, or settlement terms.
6. What does the severance cap do?
The cap limits only the severance component. If the raw severance exceeds the entered cap, the calculator reduces that amount before adding notice pay, leave pay, and other compensation items.
7. Are taxes and deductions always accurate?
They are estimated from the inputs you provide. Real payroll withholding can differ because of exemptions, jurisdiction rules, social contributions, non-taxable items, and payroll-specific adjustments.
8. Can I export the result for recordkeeping?
Yes. The calculator includes CSV and PDF export options so you can download a concise summary of the result for internal review, documentation, or employee separation files.
