Formula Used

The calculator uses double indicator titration logic. P is the phenolphthalein endpoint. T is the methyl orange or total endpoint. Both values are corrected by the blank volume.

Effective normality: N = acid normality × acid factor.

Dilution factor: DF = prepared solution volume ÷ aliquot volume.

Carbonate and bicarbonate case: when P < T ÷ 2, moles CO3 = N × P ÷ 1000. Moles HCO3 = N × (T - 2P) ÷ 1000.

Carbonate and hydroxide case: when P > T ÷ 2, moles CO3 = N × (T - P) ÷ 1000. Moles OH = N × (2P - T) ÷ 1000.

Mass in full sample: moles in aliquot × dilution factor × molar mass.

Percent: component mass ÷ sample basis mass × 100.

Total alkalinity: T × N × 50000 ÷ aliquot volume.

Purpose of the Analysis

Experiment 13A usually studies carbonate alkalinity by acid titration. The sample may contain carbonate, bicarbonate, or hydroxide. Each species reacts with acid in a predictable way. The first endpoint uses phenolphthalein. The second endpoint gives total neutralization. This calculator turns those endpoint readings into report sheet values.

Why Two Endpoints Matter

Carbonate ions consume acid in two steps. The first step changes carbonate into bicarbonate. The second step changes bicarbonate into carbonic acid. Bicarbonate alone reacts only after the phenolphthalein stage. Hydroxide reacts before carbonate finishes its first stage. Because of this pattern, P and T reveal the mixture type.

Replicate Handling

The tool accepts three readings for each endpoint. It averages all positive entries. This helps when one trial is not available. The range is also reported. A small range means the titration readings agree well. A large range suggests endpoint judgment, burette reading, or sample preparation should be checked.

Blank and Acid Factor

A blank correction removes acid used by water, indicators, or trace impurities. The acid factor adjusts the labeled normality after standardization. These two fields make the calculation closer to a formal laboratory report. Use zero blank when no blank titration was performed.

Percent Composition

The calculator converts titration volume into moles. It then applies dilution from the aliquot back to the full prepared sample. The molar mass changes moles into grams. Finally, the grams are divided by sample mass. Dry basis can be selected when moisture has been measured.

Result Review

Always compare P with one half of T. If P is less than half of T, carbonate and bicarbonate are present. If P equals half of T, carbonate dominates. If P is greater, hydroxide may be present. Results are calculations, so lab notes should still support the final conclusion.
