The Role of Spectator Ions
In many double-replacement reactions, certain ions remain unchanged on both the reactant and product sides of the chemical equation. These species are known as spectator ions because they do not participate directly in the chemical bond formation or phase change. By canceling out these spectator ions from the complete ionic equation, chemists derive the net ionic equation, which highlights only the chemical entities undergoing direct transformation—such as the formation of a solid precipitate, liquid water, or a gas.
