Non-carbonate hardness (NCH), often referred to as permanent hardness, represents the concentration of multivalent cations (primarily calcium and magnesium) bound to strong acid anions such as chlorides, sulfates, and nitrates in water supplies. Unlike temporary hardness caused by bicarbonates, permanent hardness cannot be removed simply by boiling the water. It requires specialized treatment methods like ion exchange, reverse osmosis, or chemical softening using lime-soda ash processes to prevent scaling in industrial boilers and domestic plumbing infrastructure.
The primary calculation relies on the relationship between total hardness and total alkalinity expressed in equivalent calcium carbonate units. When total hardness exceeds total alkalinity, the mathematical expression is defined as:
$$NCH = Total\ Hardness - Total\ Alkalinity$$
Alternatively, when computing via individual ion concentrations, calcium and magnesium values are converted to equivalent calcium carbonate masses before subtracting the total carbonate and bicarbonate alkalinity equivalents.
