Calculator

Formula Used

rate_modified is the species catch rate after ball changes. It is clamped from 1 to 255.

a = floor(((3 × HPmax − 2 × HPcurrent) × rate_modified) ÷ (3 × HPmax)) + status_bonus

When 3 × HPmax is greater than 255, Generation II scales the HP products by halving them twice.

Sleep and freeze add 10. Paralysis, poison, and burn add 0 in Pokemon Silver.

Single throw chance = (a + 1) ÷ 256. The value is capped when a reaches 255.

Cumulative chance = 1 − (1 − p)n, where p is the single throw chance and n is planned throws.

About this calculator

This calculator estimates capture odds for Pokemon Silver battles. It focuses on Generation II rules. Those rules are different from newer games. The tool accepts base catch rate, hit points, selected ball, status, level data, and special ball conditions. It then returns the modified rate, the final catch value, shake check value, single throw chance, cumulative chance, and expected throws. It also helps compare rare ball choices without wasting time during long sessions today.

Why the inputs matter

Every species has a base catch rate. Higher values are easier to catch. HP also changes the result. Lower current HP improves the capture value. Sleep and freeze add a direct bonus in Pokemon Silver. Paralysis, poison, and burn do not help here because of a Generation II status bug. Ball choice matters, but some balls have old quirks. The Moon Ball stays at normal strength. The Fast Ball only helps a few listed targets. The Love Ball checks the same gender in these games.

Planning better throws

Use this tool before spending rare balls. Start with the species rate. Enter maximum HP and current HP. Pick the correct ball. Add the wild level and your active Pokemon level when using a Level Ball. Add weight for the Heavy Ball. Mark fishing when using the Lure Ball. The report shows how one ball performs and how many tries may be needed for a chosen confidence level.

Reading the results

The single throw chance is the main value. It tells how likely the next ball is to catch the target. The cumulative chance estimates success after many identical throws. Expected throws is an average, not a promise. Low rate legendary Pokemon can still escape many times. A higher cumulative chance only reduces risk. It never guarantees success unless the Master Ball is used.

Useful notes

Generation II uses small integer steps. Rounding can change the final result. The game also uses a shake table after a failed catch check. This calculator shows that table value for reference. For very high HP, old byte behavior can create strange edge cases. Normal Pokemon Silver encounters usually stay inside safe values. Use the exports to save route notes, hunt plans, or comparison reports.

FAQs

What is a catch rate?

It is a hidden species value. A higher value means the Pokemon is easier to catch. The calculator combines it with HP, ball choice, and status.

Does sleep help in Pokemon Silver?

Yes. Sleep adds a flat bonus of 10 to the final catch value. Freeze gives the same bonus.

Does paralysis help in this calculator?

No. Generation II has a bug that skips the intended bonus for paralysis, poison, and burn. The tool shows zero bonus for those statuses.

Why does Moon Ball show 1x?

The Moon Ball does not apply its intended bonus in Gold, Silver, and Crystal. This calculator follows that old behavior.

What does cumulative chance mean?

It estimates the chance of catching the target after many identical throws. It assumes the same HP, status, and ball for every throw.

Can the calculator guarantee a catch?

Only the Master Ball result is guaranteed. Other results are probabilities. A high chance can still fail during play.

Why enter weight?

Weight is needed for the Heavy Ball. The ball can subtract or add to the species catch rate depending on the target weight.

What is the shake value?

The shake value comes from a Generation II lookup table. It helps estimate failed throw shake behavior after the catch check fails.
