Understanding Soil pH Adjustment in Potted Plants

Managing soil pH in container gardens is completely different from managing field soil. Potted plants reside in a closed ecosystem with limited volume, restricted buffering capacity, and frequent water leaching. When the soil becomes overly acidic, essential macronutrients like phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium become locked up, while toxic elements like aluminum or manganese can become overly soluble. Chemistry of Calcium Carbonate in Soil

When calcium carbonate is mixed into moist potting soil, it dissolves slowly and dissociates into calcium ions ($Ca^{2+}$) and carbonate ions ($CO_3^{2-}$). The carbonate ions react with excess hydrogen ions ($H^+$) present in the acidic soil solution, neutralizing them to form water ($H_2O$) and carbon dioxide gas ($CO_2$). This chemical neutralization reduces active acidity, driving the pH upward toward a neutral or slightly acidic range optimal for nutrient uptake.
