Formula used

Focal length (mm) is estimated from similar triangles:

f = (sensor_dimension × distance) ÷ subject_dimension

  • sensor_dimension uses sensor width for horizontal, height for vertical.
  • subject_dimension is your subject size plus margin.
  • Field of view is computed using 2 × atan(sensor_dim ÷ (2f)).
  • Depth of field uses a hyperfocal approximation with sensor-specific circle of confusion.
